Basjoo anxiety
Dear All,
I wonder if you may be able to offer some thoughts on my basjoo: https://photos.app.goo.gl/dA9Bwwf6x7YbxKw79 I'm in the UK. Its in a pot with about 70% perlite. I've recycled coffee pods by glueing them to the bottom of the pot so that it is raised off the ground, but none of the draining holes are obstructed. For the past 2 months its has produced a new leaf per week. The last leaf was smaller than the rest and took 2 weeks. The current leaf has not moved in 4 days which is so unlike it. Its been freakishly hot in the UK and we had a week of 30degrees plus last week. Now low 20s with a pleasant breeze. I have fed once a week. I've also resisted over watering, only giving (rain)water when the top 2 inches are dry. If anyone could offer any advice I would be most grateful, even if it is to pull myself together and accept that plants are funny things. best wishes Peego. |
Re: Basjoo anxiety
Check the moisture level in the middle of the pot and at the bottom (though drain holes). That is where the roots are. Use a long stem moisture meter. Once a week can be too much for potted nanas. Misting can help as the house humidity is low and drying compared to tropical environments. .... Also check the soil PH. It should be about 6.5 to 6.9

Re: Basjoo anxiety
Hi cincinnana,
Thanks for taking the time to reply, i'm grateful. I will get it outside today. UK weather has been freakish recently with a heatwave and then for the past 2 days proper heavy rain that I have not seen since I was in the tropics. Got drenched going 10 metres! But its meant to be dry today so will take it out. edit: Thanks also for sharing your photos which I really enjoyed looking at. best wishes Peego |
Re: Basjoo anxiety
Hello all,
Am delighted to say that my Basjoo anxiety is cured: https://photos.app.goo.gl/vyjCx2nKFp8kk58P7 Back to a new leaf every week and they are getting bigger each time. Incidently my Ensente (also seen to the left) has really got excited and is producing 2 new leaves every week. Best wishes Peego |
