My banana tree is in a greenhouse, 75 plus degrees, 60% plus humidity. A banana flower emerged in mid December, and grew out very fast, but after about a month it stopped growing out of the stock and is at a standstill ever since. It is in a 20 gallon pot that drains freely onto the greenhouse floor. The tree is about 5 feet tall and the variety is Grand Nain. There are no pests and the trunk and leaves are very healthy. The trunk is 26 inches circumference at the base. I am located in Niagara Falls area. It has light through the roof and walls. I wonder if it has maximized the pot size and stopped, or some other problem. I have several other banana trees beside it that are not fruiting and they are growing new leaves. I will try to post pictures and it hasn’t changed in several weeks.

a way bigger pot is recommended
65 gal ++ did it get any supplemental light over the winter out of curiosity? so it is over 2 feet wide at the base and in a 20 gal? Last edited by subsonicdrone : 02-17-2019 at 05:49 PM. |

Thanks for the comments. I posted wrong. It’s 26 inch circumference, not diameter. Big error. Thanks again.

Since you are controlling temperature and humidity I would now strongly recommend planting in ground. Remove the pot first. Next very important step is applying a high potassium fertilizer. I use 6-3-16 which is called the super fruiter available at Diamond-R here in south Florida. The Potassium is 16. Water well and you should get better results.
Use 4 cups of fertilizer to kick start the process and then cut back to 2 per month. ![]() |
