Bananas from Madeira Islands
Doing some research for potential travel to the Madeira Islands (autonomous region of Portugal off the coast of Morocco). Found out they’ve been growing bananas there for hundreds of years, introduced in the 1500’s.
So they now grow Grand Naine’s but I also see two varieties I have never heard of before: Robusta and Gal. I believe Robusta is of the giant Cavendish variety (also known as Poyo?)... and web search found Gal was developed in Israel as an “elite cultivar from the Williams” and is “more agile than Williams” (don’t know what that means). Anyway, curious if anyone ever heard of a Robusta or Gal varieties or tasted them?
