Bananas in GA?

Intersting article I read today about the possibility of commercial bananas in Georgia.

Can Georgia develop viable banana industry?

Maybe I am stupid, but why would you want to do commercial bananas in zone 8? I would think Southern Cali, Southern TX and Southern Florida would be the best places to grow commercially.

My thoughts exactly, I suppose with the right variety you may be able to get a crop in nine months, but you are going to be froze out every winter. Personally, I think Southern Florida is borderline because our average lows in January and February are in the 50s.

I saw an earlier article by the same guy on UGAs web page and it was labeled Dwarf Namwah Georgia FACES
