Bananas & Cannas

Are these two plants related? They look so similar, the must be cousins!

i believe that they are. i havent taken my botony classes as of yet, but if you look at the leaf structure between the nana and the cannas, they look very much the same. and the canna will pup like a nana too.

They are both in the order Zingiberales which also contains gingers (Zingiberaceae), heliconia (Heliconiaceae), bird of paradise and friends (Strelitziaceae), costus (Costaceae), marantas and calatheas (Marantaceae) and orchidantha (Lowiaceae), in addition to Cannaceae and Musaceae.

Interesting that all those tropicals are in the same family yet are so different in the zones they will tolerate (cold). Would you say that they are pretty much require the same soil & water requirements?

They are not in the same botanical family, but the same order (a step above family in the hierarchy of taxonomy). They are from all over the world from many different regions. Growing requirements can change even among species in the same genera, so no, they do not all have the same requirements necessarily, but many do due to the fact that most are from similar/the same region/climate. There are however species that grow in completely different areas climatologically but are still related.

Pretty much, all the zingiberales have impressive leaves and that's why it's my favorite order of plants.

I am expanding my collection of Cannas this year as I am running out of room for keeping bananas growing through the winter. I like the variegation in some of the Cannas. The Canna's ability to bloom in our short growing season makes a difference.

Do bananas get leaf rollers like cannas? Mine seems to have twists at the end of the new leaves.
