Ha! This made me laugh! I have NEVER seen bananas growing here other than my yard. Believe me, i've been looking too! I have to drive about 3 hours into California before I start seeing "Banana trees around the neighborhood"

I've seen Orinocos everywhere, Maurellis, and possibly Blue Javas. Many of the plants I see produce tiny little bananas and aren't in good shape! There are these huge clumps of what might be Orinoco on the way to my school. Funny thing is there aren't many banana plants in my area. Probably because of the winds that we get.

I can't when I'm on the way to school because I need to get there on time. I don't think that my mom would stop the car just so I could take pictures of banana plants. However, when I start driving myself, I might be able to make a few stops on the way home from school. But that probably won't be for another few months.

Lots of good info about growing mangos (along with other tropical fruits) here:

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Scroll down and watch the videos.
Fairchild Gardens is located in South Florida.

I used to work for a local utility company and when my buddy and I used to drive around town I was always looking and commenting on the bananas we would see in the neighborhood. After a few days, my buddy said....Darnit Man, you got me doing the same thing now. it's habit forming.
When I used to commute through New Orleans on I-10 and 610 sometimes they would have a mild winter and lots of beautiful bananas along the roads.

The first time I visited New Orleans I marveled at the bananas growing in the Jackson Square across from the St Louis Cathedral. (This was before my banana addiction so I don't know what kind they were! lol) Some years later, when I visited again - the bananas must have been frozen out - they were replaced with flowering pears! - What a disappointment!! I see more than enough of those here at home in Pittsburgh. Of course I have the only bananas in my neighborhood and I know of only six private plantings in the whole city!! ;)
