Banana Tree Sunburn???

I am new to banana plants. Can anyone tell me the best lighting for banana plants.

I have a Banana Plant in a large terra cotta pot. I take it inside during the winter months but place it on my front porch during the summer months.

I took it outside here a few weeks ago and noticed that some of the leaves were beginning to get brown specks on them and in some places they were turning white.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it this sunburn on a banana plant? If not can you advise me on what it might be that is causing the browning a white patches in spots.

It is in a pot so I can move it as needed. Thanks

You should gradually increase your banana plant exposure to sunlight after keeping indoors during winter. When the light changes from low to much higher intensity suddenly the banana plant may experience shock. Over time though it will adjust and everything will be fine.

Ok, Thanks!! that is what is happening then. I put it outside where it gets morning Sun and afternoon shade. I will put it in nearly full shade then for a few weeks then move it back to the morning sun location.

Question, should I cut off the sunburned leaves or leave them on the plant? It has started to grow lots of new leaves since I Put it outside.

Unless you're really anal about appearance, leave old leaves where they are; they'll disappear without you doing a darned thing when they're ready to let go. (I have recently planted bananas which suffered in pots for a few years in addition to repotting a plantain that was dying but is now perking up. All 3 look awful except all have new leaves so the old stuff stays mainly because cutting them off is really difficult and I'm very lazy.)

There is another thing to observe about bananas in pots: The pots should not be in full sun.
The plants tolerate sun well, even though in the wild they are mostly in dappled shade. When
the sun shines on the pots, the roots get too hot and do not not like that. I had two plants,
both were in full sun. One thrived, the other did not. When it occurred to me, that the one,
which thrived had the pot in the shade, while the pot of the other was in full sun, I moved
the ailing one, so that its pot was also shaded and it soon recovered. Of course none of that
applies to plants in the ground.
