Re: Banana story
Where do find the "magic banana" called Yangambi Km5, which has been mentioned at the end of the article (end of page 4/beginning page 5).
By the way:good interessting stuff to read! Thanks for sharing Is there a breading program for any cold hardy banana? There should be one! I would co-fund it :-) Last edited by BB73 : 07-14-2010 at 11:27 AM. |

Re: Banana story
Belgium would be closer and they got also a greenhouse there. And for selecting cold hardy bananas, I gues a colder part of the earth should used as testing area!

Re: Banana story
I have a hard copy of this article I got a few years ago and at the time thought it was one of the best popular articles about the current state of bananas, way better than the Popular Scientists fate of the banana article which made a lot of headlines.
'KM 5' used to be sold by Going Bananas, I don't think they are offering it right now but maybe they will again in the future. It's a good tasting banana, but I wouldn't say exceptional. It's about as good and interesting as any of the many good and interesting tasting bananas. I would say it's sweet and aromatic, without any noticeable acidity, and with a strange, but not offensive, after-taste. However, it is extremely sensitive to Banana Bunchy Top Virus. I have tried growing it several times in Hawaii and it always succumbs when very young. Even most other susceptible varieties may make it to fruiting once before succumbing, but 'KM 5' has almost no tolerance at all.
