Following is an interesting quote from Pitangadiego's web site: ORINOCO "The name 'Orinoco' is due to W. O. Lessard who first encountered the plant growing by the Orinoco River. Lessard was a pioneer banana nurseryman in Florida who wrote a very influential but sometimes inaccurate book on bananas." ENCANTO FARMS |

![]() Mostly time consuming but when you get set up it will save time and maybe a few plants that might have gotten neglected. So with all of the time you saved you can go and find more plants to grow. Vicious cycle. They also have some info on how to get set up. Good luck.

![]() I'm definitely going to read into. I lost quite a few plants and that may have saved them. I had the issue of my corms rotting during spring. I amended the soil with composted cow manure and I thought that would help but the corm rotted. That area dried out so bad this summer, I can hardly dig into it. I just gave up watering for the most part lol

![]() Cameron, Compost is good but drainage is of an important factor. If your soil doesn't drain good then you might think of raising the height of the plant so the soil can do so. Here, my problem is that the soil percolates very well and moisture has to be keep by means of compost and mulch. Drips work well but all else is need to be attended to also. Good luck.

![]() Thanks for the advice. I've heard of people using Perlite but I was wondering how much would I have to use for a small flowerbed?

![]() Tons and tons of oak tree leaves. Holds moisture and decomposes enriching the soil. I have at least a 8" thick layer over the entire bed.

![]() Thanks Darkman. I think I'm going to look around town to see if anyone has any bags of oak leaves. I use hackberry leaves but they decompose very quickly

![]() I collect bags of leaves in the early spring. That is when the oaks drop there old leaves here. Two to three days a week for four to five hours a day for about three months. I literally have easily over two thousand bags by the end of leaf season. I'm down to about 100 bags right now and they will be gone when I winterize. I separate the oak leaves from pine straw too. I use the pine straw for the winterizing too as it is lighter and a little better insulator. It is the airspace that makes good insulation and the straw stays dryer. I'm starting to get in gear for this as the colder temps are starting to sneek in the now. Low of 46 tomorrow.

![]() I get a lot of junk mixed in with mine sometimes. Every bag is like Cracker Jacks. It comes with a surprize. I found some pretty bizzarre things in the bags.

![]() I have a volunteer Watermelon that there is a good chance it came from bags of leaves I dumped. It is a large fruited variety, probably a charleston grey. I have had three off of it so far and have three more large ones ready and about twelve small ones still growing.

![]() So, I haven’t updated in a LONG time! I only have one banana photo today to share and also photos of my new greenhouse. We put the plastic on today. We haven’t framed the ends, but we’re getting there. My poor yard has been neglected the last couple months with work and school taking forefront. I now am done with the semester and going to take a few months break from school! So, hopefully I will have more photos to share with everyone shortly and will be able to post more on bananas! I miss my friends on here and chatting! I miss my yard too LOL! So, the first photo is my Lavender Orinata taken today blooming beautifully out in the yard! The rest are the new greenhouse (with my kids inside) and also my tangerine’s that were the only ones really left on the tree (they were hidden behind canna’s we cut back to the ground today!)
Hope everyone had a great Christmas
