Hey everyone. I bought about a month ago a banana plant, Musa Bajoo I believe is his name. He is supposedly a giant banana and can reach 3m high. I transpoted him 4 days ago and since then he is not feeling all too well and I am wondering if anyone can help me figure out what might be wrong with him? I am attaching photos. His lower leaves are wilting and there is some discoloration around the edges. Also, his cigar leaf is not opening up and staying shut.

I also transpoted another banana that I got: pink banana that is supposed to stay small and reach a max of 1.2m high. She is opening her cigar leaf but also lower leaves are wilting and there is some weird spot on one of her leaves. Attaching 2 photos of her.

Could it be just a transplant schock or is it something more serious? I couldnt find anything online so I am looking for any advices. Thank you!

Too much water! ... The soil picture appears to contain too much peat. You need a very fast drain potting soil. Use a commercial potting mix and add 50% perlite for a 50/50 mix. Make sure the pots drain and the excess water is discarded. Repot the plant with the top of the corm at the soil surface.

Ugh... and i bought for them supposedly a special banana potting mix and mixed it with seramis clay granules and thought they would thrive. I don’t have perlite, can I use Seramis clay granules instead?

The perlite should be available at the big -box garden centers. You can use course sand (not play sand), course pine bark, or small pebbles mixed in the soil.


i'm not familiar with Seramis clay. Doing a google I found their info. Quote 'Our clay granules can absorb large amounts of water, store them and return them to the houseplant. The small, porous clay grains suck up the water like a sponge. ...' This is exactly what you DO NOT WANT!


Peat also 'sucks up water like a sponge' So you need to keep peat in the mix to a minimum and mixing in the perlite helps to reduce this.


Banana plants need fresh water not stagnate water. The pot needs to drain and the excess water discarded to prevent water from pooling in the bottom.

Thank you so much once again! I will have to order it online as due to the corona situation, things are limited around here. I found this one that can be here by the end of next week: https://www.amazon.de/Gartenbau-Perl..._t1_B01MYBUU01 It says that the pebbles are between 2mm and 6mm, would this be fine for thee little bananas? I feel like I am throwing a bunch of dumb questions around but better be on the safe side than sorry later haha )

if you change soil,still dont over water them.
