We do have the clay soil and I pretty much do a combination of both methods, dig a hole as deep as possible, add Gypsum to loosen up the clay, too. Never thought of using coarse sand for the banana plants.

Looks great! One thing potentially to add is planting hardy bananas in places with a cold winter. I dig a large hole and supplement with materials to aid in the drainage. I then bury the plant much deeper than I would with a nanner I would be digging back up. This helps protect the corm in long cold winters like this one. Thanks for the pics.

We have the clay soil too, I found that it can easily be removed before returning the coarse sand to the planting area. There are many beneficial uses in agriculture for the clay.
