Banana Planting Location Considerations
I've got a slew of different banana varieties that I want to plant in the ground by my back fence to create a privacy screen. What is the closest I can get away with from the fence itself and from each other? I plan on alternating dwarf and full size bananas.
Any trouble with having them near underground gas, sewer, or water lines? If so, again what kind of distance would be safe? I'm also putting in a Florida variegated, ae-ae, siam ruby, and Zebrina rojo behind my pool. It's an in-ground pool and seems to have about a foot thick wall on the backside. Similar question: any issue with planting right behind it? Say a foot or two, so the trees overhang the pool slightly? If so, how far back should would be safe? Thanks for any input you can offer! Re: Banana Planting Location Considerations
I have all of mine 7ft apart from each other and the fence but that's actually smaller than recommended, however several are in raised beds so the roots/mat is more controlled.
Per my research the recommended spacing is 8ft-12ft between dwarf/full sized varieties if you're planting on the ground. The roots & mat will grow big and compete with each other if they are too close. You can always grow some in containers. I know wstrickland grows some in whiskey barrels by the pool.

Re: Banana Planting Location Considerations
I don't recommend alternating dwarf and tall as the tall plants will shade out the dwarfs. I like my plants to get maximum sun. You might consider tall plants in the center with dwarfs on wings.
My plants are about 3' from the fence with 6' in between but I actively manage my patch (removing pups) with only one fruiting plant and one follower which will be the fruiting plant in the next season. |

Re: Banana Planting Location Considerations
Any issues with them being close to underground utilities? I figure they’d probably be one of the safer plants to have near them?

Re: Banana Planting Location Considerations
If your wall or fence is North to South.. I'd plant with decent distance between them.. My going rate is 10 feet min.. give the plant some space to breath good, and steal everything in the ground where it is..
