Banana Plant Problems

Here are a few pictures of my Dwarf Cavendish banana plant. The newest two leaves came out around the same time. They are smaller in length and width. Also, they are lighter in color. The older leaves came out with a few lighter streaks and also lighter in color. What could be causing this issue? I just took out a pup that was starting to outgrow this mother plant. The pup's newest leaves were also lighter in color. Is this a cause of over fertilization? Is this banana bunchy top virus? What could could be the problem? I'm worried I won't be able to figure out the problem since this is my first banana.

Are you in an area or did you get your plant from an area with bunchy top virus? The streaks in the leaves are a concern. Was the plant newly planted? What has your weather been like? Did you fertilize recently? Is the soil too wet or too dry? Is the pup healthy? Did the problem start after removing the pup?

Re: Banana Plant Problems

I’m in Gainesville, Florida 9a. I got my banana plant from TyTy’s plant nursery in Georgia. It was shipped to me about 4 months ago. The plant was around six inches tall at the time. It rebounded quick but soon after, two months later, after the first few healthy leaves it started showing signs of lighter colored new leaves. My weather has been spurts of rain every week. I water almost daily with how temps get, but we are very humid all the time. I have fertilized a lot since the beginning using 10-10-10 granular fertilizer and black kow compost in the soil. Recently, I gave the plant a water soluble 0-0-60 fertilizer to boost its growth; soon after that is when I saw the two weird leaves come up right at the same time. The pup seems pretty healthy and weirdly enough, was starting to outgrow the mother plant. Although, there is some slight discoloration on the leaves as well. I have the plant growing in the ground getting really good drainage. I just removed the pup today to try and save the mother plant.

I would stop fertilizing for a couple of weeks at least and see if it works itself out.

Thank you very much for the advice. I’m doing exactly as you say. Looks like the cigar leaf is going to be more like a regular leaf once it unfurls. I’m new to bananas so any little thing that looks “wrong” with the plant makes me super worried. I think I have learned that it’s best to be patient and look on the bright side of things. Trying to baby the plant and adding too much fertilizer, sun, and water will not help things. I think I’ll just bring it down a notch and see what happens.
