Hi,

I have 3 Bananna trees from the same parent plant, although the parent plant did not make it through the early spring as I think it got too much water too soon and fell over, but these 3 suckers have done really well and there are even 3 more little ones that have popped up (although I don't think those 3 new ones will make it through the winter). I believe these are

I am in Vancouver Canada, and we are heading into the winter (we are in Fall right now and temps are not yet below 0, but are getting to about 5-8 degrees over night sometimes). These plants did really well in the spring summer and have grown a lot and were shooting new leaves every 2nd day it seemed. They are still growing new leaves, just not as fast. What I have noticed is that the leaves are turning more on the yellow side and there are black dots along the middle ridge of the leaves, it looks like dirt, but doesn't wipe off. I have noticed some of the new leaves to have this on it also. These plants get full sun for most of the day (aside from sunrise and sunset). I was watering everyday when it was really hot (we had a "heat dome" in July). I am not watering much right now as we are getting rain frequently. I think these are Musa Basjoo or cavindesh (I am not totally sure as the original one was given to me by my neighbor who basically has a plantation in his front yard (probably more than 20!).

I am just wondering, is this normal for banana's in this type of climate as they get towards winter, or is there something wrong? Some leaves have turned brown and I have trimmed them off, but those were the older growth leaves, none of the new ones.

Seems like end of season blues....

Tropical plants will deteriorate when light levels are 10 hours or less and temps dip .
Completely normal for a banana plant and all tropical plants that are grown out of their sweet spot.
Do expect more carnage in the following weeks.
Ask your friend what his plants do?
