banana leaf folded over

The newest leaf is so long it folded over itself and is just hanging, yet healthy as still growing. It was windy yesterday so is there any need for concern? thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Another member, Sandy, once posted that a leaf folding down was usually because the plant needed water. I've had it only happen to potted plants and think she's right.

the leaf was unfurling and maybe the wind blew it because there is a specific point where it sort of snapped. the weird part is we have had much rain this week. maybe i can upload a pic

I'll post one of the photos directly here in the thread:

It's pretty hard to say. Are the plants growing in full sun? How long have they been in this location? I'm trying to guess if they are just recently waking up or if you've just transplanted them or what. If the plant isn't getting enough sun the leaves can be weaker and break easier, I believe.

thanks for posting the pic. i could not figure out how to do it directly. the plant was there last year, dug it up for the, and replanted it one month ago. good/great sunlight from noon untill early evening. also will the next new leaf be able to emerge given that this leaf is hanging down? thanks in advance.

It can be from not enough water, too much water or any stress. Maybe the wind was too much for it. It will be OK though. I had leaves fold for all of above reasons including being rootbound. I'm sure the next leaf will be normal.

Re: banana leaf folded over

I'd just cut it off, to make it easier for the next leaf. The wind probably broke it, but it's not going to pick itself back up, in any case.

Strange timing to see this thread here. We just had a thunderstorm tonight and it broke a bunch of leaves off my banana's too. :(

Cut it off and don't look back. They grow so fast you won't notice after much time.

No No No. Anything green is good and adds energy to the plant. Loss of leaf surface leads to smaller fruit and less fruit, in the end. If it is in the way of a new leaf coming out, prop it up till the next leaf emerges. Removing anything green from a banana plant is always a last resort.
