Before there were bananas, there was scorched ground that was hard as concrete. (May 2009)

Wow, thats a ton of growth!! They look great! Fertile soil is definitely the answer to lots of fast growth (and lots of warm weather too!)
Thanks for sharing!

There are three varieties in there. A super-dwarf cavendish up front. Some sort of dwarf (Rajapuri?) and Icecream for the tallest.
I've had a lot of trouble getting bananas to grow well here.... something about the soil. For these, I pretty much dug a 5'x5'x3'deep hole and filled it with manure. ![]() |

I know there has been a lot of talk lately about different varieties being sold as 'Icecream'. Can anyone tell from these pics if this one is a true 'Icecream'? And if the one next is a Rajapuri? I had bought a dwarf brazillian, red iholene, and rajapuri. Only one survived. I dug up corms and moved to this location. Originally I thought the corm I planted was the Iholene, but even with my poor ID skills, i'm fairly certain it is not! What do you guys think?

It depends on the winter and where the banana is planted. Last winter most died to the ground (low around 27F). The winter before, some plants made it through with no damage!
The first frost here is usually in December. |

Looks really great, I wish that bananas would grow that fast here in Denmark!
