Banana flowers without leaves
Hey y’all
Happy spring! Quick question here, my largest basjoo started to flower in November last year and is making some little bananas now…unfortunately the main plant has lost all of her leaves. But there is a decent sized pup that already has a new leaf shot out and a new cigar ready to unfurl probably by tomorrow. My question is will the mother plant continue to be supported by the pup, or will it just die at this point with no leaves if it’s own? This is my first time getting a banana to flower so I just think it’s cool to have the flower, but have no plans to eat any of the banana as I’ve heard basjoo aren’t too tasty |

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
Without leaves there is no photosynthetic contribution to the mat.

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
The stem that bloomed will die, the pup will take over and continue to grow. The corm may also put out more pups.

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
I would let it go until the stem gets soft.

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
Sorry but it's not like that. I have my da jiao without viable leaves and the bunch is growing very well...

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
I wish I had known that! I chopped mine when it wasn't quite done because of no leaves.

The stem will die after the bloom is done.

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
Did she mean the male bud? Once the big male bud has stopped opening?

I hope your right Luisport. I have a saba flowering right now, with burned leaves. It does continue to grow, but I question if the bananas can fill out enough to eat..

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
They probably didn't mean the male bud because that would only account for French-type buds and certainly not for False Horn-type or Horn.

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
One of my tall namwahs (Lou Ferrigno's successor) just popped out a naked bloom at around 11'. I knew it was going to happen but hoped it wouldn't. We'll see what happens.

Re: Banana flowers without leaves
Leave the bunch where it is. The pup may or may not provide energy to the parent. Nothing to lose by leaving the bunch. The parent will not add energy to the pup at this point apart from already stored energy.
