Banana bloom in Pa.

I said I would let you know if my basjo made it thru the winter.Yes it did make it. It even bloomed.I posted photos in the gallery.It took me most of the night to post them.I will need to get some help to bring them into a thread. stan.

I live in NJ. great job.

How long did it take to bloom?
And when did you cover it for winter?
I am not sure is this a edible kind?
Do you think the will get ripe before
winter? Sorry I just have to know.

i love how you straw baled it....very interesting. ill have to keep that in mind when i overwinter my big nanas! you dont mind if i steef your idea do you? love the bloom its so pretty!

It took 3-4 weeks afer flag leaf. covered 3rd. week in nov.-after hard frost.Musa basjo is not edible.You need 2 plants blooming 4-6 weeks apart to get bananas that will ripen. Log on to webebananas.com (encanto farms)-they have a wealth of banana info. Thanks for you interest in my bananas. stan

I think this year I will use bags of leaves. The bales of hay were hard to come by. Most important is tarp to keep it dry. stan
P.S. I placed towells and bubble warp around the stem and then the hay.

I have the Basjoo also. Info that came with mine says it will produce small seedy fruit. I still have mine in a pot. It's about 5ft tall. Is it too late too put in the ground in NJ zone 7.

we have plenty of straw here, its a bit much, but oh for the love of a nana tree, and i have already priced the bubble wrap at walmart and the tarps. lol.

I would try it in the ground. Give it a spot with good drainage,good soil,plenty of water and fert.After first hard frost cut back just under first leaf stem.I would wait a few days for fresh cut to stop bleeding. Then wrap with old towels,bubble wrap,or what ever else you can think of to insulate.Then the bales of hay or bags of leaves. MOST IMPORTANT a large tarp,to keep it DRY DRY DRY. You can start to uncover around mid April,a little bit at a time. Last year my two in the ground did just fine. The ten pups in the house - only five made it. Good luck. If it dosen't make it,I can mail you one my pups, or we could drop one off on our way to the Jersey shore. stan

Hi Stan, thank you so much for the info. Basjoo hasn't opened a leaf since I got it a few weeks ago. There is two in the same pot, both with an unfurled
leaf. You helped me to make up my mind. I am going to plant it. Thanks for the offer of a pup. I have 2 Siam Ruby, Dwarf Musa Novak and today I bought
another Basjoo at Lowes. I saw them there last week. Today they were gone.
But, I don't give up. There it was amongst the Canna. Leaf is similar. It was
hiding there just waiting for me. Maybe I can give you some to if I get lucky with pups. My dwarf has two tiny sprouts. Hopefully they will turn into little
banana plants.
