Me... not my plants!

I'm not sure I can bear another winter. It gets to me more and more as the years go by. If it weren't for my grandkids, I'd be moving south!

Anyway, got the flu just as the first cold spell came through and didn't get all my bananas taken care of. Have lost alot, I'm sure, but still got lots in the house. We can't walk around here, what with all the huge pots and banana leaves scraping the ceiling, hanging over the couch, kitchen table and beds. *heh* Can't get in the spare bedroom, either. Most have gone semi-dormant and just begging to get outside. I believe I've lost my brazilian and dwarf reds. Not sure which is my goldfingers since I didn't label... because I just knew I wouldn't have a problem remembering what is what. HA! Fool me!

MediaHound sent me a great Alocasia that has continued to leaf out but with smaller leaves. It has really missed Florida! Will be happy in a few more weeks. We've had a few warm days but wind has picked up and turned cool... seems colder with the wind.

Gone back to my den for a few more days. Send sunshine and southern jet stream!

Sorry about your losses, if you ever need anything back, just ask. Especially since you lost the Dwarf Reds.

Best news of the day... It's suppose to be warm today but so far is still right coolish. Wanted to do yardwork but too breezy to burn. Yesterday mornings storms knocked down some branches. Gotta hate those pines!

Taylor, let me know if you see any good banana or palm buys around. Ya know I shop up there alot.

Thanks, Jarred. With the clear skies and warm weather viewing the lunar eclipse this evening will be so much more pleasant.

Enjoy it- here it's supposed to be 45 tomorrow.

Today- it was 65. We cut down a dead tree, put down some mulch and other things.

I only know of one palm tree salesman, but he only sells large quantities of common types, that happen to be 6 or 7 feet tall from the start!

Also, McDonald Garden Center is pretty good with tropicals, but they specialize in Citrus and Bird of Paradise. Palms and other Bananas are secondary. (plus they only have basjoo, maurelli, and a few others, but for $100 each! )

I really want to see the Lunar Eclipse, but there is a large forest blocking the view. (apparently the moon is supposed to rise, and all the action happens in that short amount of time?) So, it looks like I might miss it.
Can anyone take pictures and post them?

Anywho, let's hope the Groundhog was right, 3 weeks earlier!

Taylor, I just went out to take a pic for you but couldn't figure out how to work the camera at night. Got Katelyn out there (dang these 14 y/o kids that know it all!) waiting for the clouds to pass again. Nothing spectacular in color but it's cool anyways! It might be high enough right now to see it over the tree tops. Check it out because pics weren't any good.

McDonalds Garden Center... I got quite a few bananas there last year.. all around $15. That was at the one over by Chesapeake Square Mall. Palms were -really- high there. Check out K-Mart on Military Hwy too. They had bananas and palms last year. I got a bunch of stuff for $4 and $5 late July and early august. I was going plant hunting tomorrow but since its turning cold again, don't think I will.

I did get to see the eclipse, barely! It came up a little bit over the "forest" and I took out the only pair of binoculars that we have.

I broke a piece off of my telescope last winter, so I just packed it up and stuck it in the closet. Too bad I did. When I was really into Astronomy, every night I would go out and look (even at the sun, which you aren't supposed to do. I just stuck a piece of paper where I would normally stick my eyes, and you could even see the sunspots!) What is amazing is that you can see each little crater on the moon. With the telescope, I bet the eclipse would have been even more amazing.

I might spend the next few minutes googling some pictures of it. Hopefully, someone out there has posted them!


I go the the McDonald Garden Center on Independence Boulevard (VB) (since its only about 5 minutes away) and shop. I don't know why the price difference, but that's suspicious....

Also, about K-Marts- the one at "Town Center" (VB), or the one in Kill Devil Hills (NC) , I don't know if you go to that one, but these 2 locations have the same price. No Bananas, but lots of palms ranging from $5 to $100 or more. They have a good selection too. I just decided to go with the Chamaerops Humilis. (Sp?) Said it was hardy to zone 7, but I think its dying. Better luck next year!

I also had a palm (unknown) from McDonald Garden Center from when I was very young, ~$35.00, and it died last year. It didn't die actually, it just stopped putting out leaves. Mold?
