Drummer Arkansas Banana Report 2008

The bananas are growing well in Arkansas this year with the heat kicking in and high humidity. Regular rainfall has produced great looking banana leaves, and they are growing very rapidly now.

Musa Basjoo started growing in early March. This clump began with small 3 inch tissue cultured plants four years ago and have turned into quite the banana clump!

Velutina (Randy's ecotype). New this year.

Veinte Cohol. New this year. Notice the black coloration on the trunk of this banana. It will be hard to tell the natural coloring from potential rot during the winter.

Raja Puri. New this year. I can tell this one will have a much thicker pseudostem compared to other bananas that I've grown.

Musella lasiocarpa. These plants are offspring from the mother plant that produced 7 flowers last year.

Mother plant last year.

I'll say. That is one happy, healthy clump of Musas.

Thanks! It was only covered with a pile of leaves about half way up the pseudostem. The low last winter was around 17 degrees and the stem stayed very firm all winter. It grew again when temps warmed up in April.
