Default Arizona Banana growers unite!

Let's see them bananas!

what are you guys growing?

what have you tried that fairs well in our weather here?

what's fruiting?
________________________________________________

I'm currently growing some Apple bananas I planted last spring. I got some fairly good size corms from ebay and have sprouted a lot of pups from them. I have them planted in two corners of my yard. Got some frost damage the past month but are now currently pushing new leaves again since we've been getting high 70's temps.

April 2014 - emerging from the ground

June 2014

October 2014

January 2015 - frost protection on before the freeze.

other corner wasn't protected with frost cloth but it didn't get much frost damaged since it's in a protected spot under the Canary palm.

January 23, 2015 - pushing new leaves out.

I also bought small pups from the fall rare fruit growers plant sale. got a Raja puri and a thousand finger pup. I'll be planting them in ground once it warms up some more. I'm also currently trying to acquire a dwarf namwah. I've read that they do pretty well here especially during the summer months.

I did not ban but reported him and highly suggested that he should be banned. And it was my pleasure to do so.

I live in Peoria and my banana plants really got hit when it went down to 28F. They were way too tall to try and protect them. The stems are okay but leaves turned brown. Lost a bunch of bananas. Trick is to try and make them shoot early spring. Mine shot in November.

Great to see another Arizonan on here! How are your bananas doing? Mine loved all our spring rain. Here's a few newbies around the pool.

My Raja Puri has a flower head coming out. The wind is really shredding the leaves. They like the cool weather now. Hope the others start flowering soon.
Most are more than a foot in diameter.

awesome! ^ could you post pics?

I can't wait for mine to start flowering. Mine are all doing great. The dwarf namwah is growing very fast.

What do you guys feed your bananas?

I have a lot of mulching around mine. I also give them a palm fertilizer that I have (10-5-10) and also some Sul-po-mag every two weeks to give them an extra boost of potassium.
