Default Aqua Globe

Has anyone used these Aqua Globes to water their plants over the winter indoors?

It looks like they have bad reviews but I wanted to check with you all.

Hey Stump, I used to collect antique American glass so I was intrigued by these when I first saw them. Thing is ,can you imagine the time it takes to fill the little guys dribbling tap water in to them?................................ I go through a 3 gallon can every day and barely have the patience for that.

Oh and...........3 doe ,last 3 Saturdays.

I have never used them (all of my plants are outdoor plants, nature takes care of them) but I have a friend in Canada who swears by them, and at them. Apparently they're great for plants that don't mind having their feet a little soggy, but no good for the rest. That, and you need an eyedropper to fill them efficiently.

Last Sunday, my fiancee' had a surprise Bday party for me & one of the gifts was Aqua globe. You have to run water slow - small stream to fill. What got my attention was that (it says) if you push it in soil the glass may break. You have to poke a hole first.
I am trying one now -- haven't checked it for few days. It seems the water will only be released where the tip is, where I always water plants evenly. So, maybe one end could get too much & other end too dry? I'll let you know. May be good for small plants, or use 2 per plant...we'll see.

I have used something similar to the Aqua Globe call Aqua Spikes. You just put them over the top of a plastic bottle and push into the ground. I had very good luck using them with my Tomatoes and Strawberry's last year. I wanted to try the globe because I think the water will drip slower from the Aqua globe because the top end of it is closed off and sealed. With the spikes I cut a hole in the plastic bottle to fill it from the top, and also because once the water runs low it would suck the bottle in.

Thanks Howard ;-)
How about we experiment with a small water bottle & cut hole in the top to fill?

Happy belated Birthday Patty

As to the Aqua Globe your right about POINT of moisture where the tip is inserted, would the surrounding dry potting media leech or wick that moisture away from the tip and distribute it more?

If you have hole in top to it will just let water run out! With only one hole (on bottom) uses vacuum to work for slower release.

Thanks Bill & Sam! Thank GOD I got no plants. I have almost 140 potted plants now (including 7 nanas- 5 varieties)! A plant is the wrong thing to give someone who has that many.
Oops, I forgot...yes I got 3 hyacinth bulbs in a bowl of rocks. They are sprouting. I don't have any of those so now have to look up about growing them.
I'll be at Mike's house Sat & will check on the aqua globe & feel the soil around it.

My real opinion of aqua globe is they MAY be good for 4 inch or less pots. I have one in my avocado plant - 3 gallon bucket, for 6 days & soil was very dry except at globe opening. It only used less than 3/4 water in the globe. I then watered it with at least 1/2 gal of water which is normal watering. I wouldn't trust it ... but, it looks nice.
