yes, that would DEFFINITLY be a good indicator!!!

My sole reason for taking test fingers is to see if they ripen and taste great- then I know I can harvest them if there is a bad frost on the way. If they taste bad in any way, then I know I have to put a blanket or sheet around the bunch to protect from damaging frost/leave the bunch on longer. if we never get any killing frost, I will leave the bunches on till they ripen. (always ideal of course)

Anyhow, should I wait longer to take test fingers or should I take one or two to see how they taste?

I suggest waiting a bit longer. They seem to to have hard corners and probably should get a more rounder look.

Your temps over the next month look pretty good so I wouldn't rush. As long as your other banana plants are still growing (putting out new leaves) then the bunch should be developing.

Thanks BBJ.

I think I may have outsmarted myself this week. I double bagged my bunches in anticipation of this past week's cold front but the temp dropped lower than I expected. I'm afraid I should have harvested the bunches. In a couple days I'll check and see if they made it. The main patch with the bunches looks like it got hit with an A bomb. I covered the new patch and those plants look okay.

I'm on the slope of hope with fingers crossed.

Hope the bunches made it and most of them are filled out enough to ripen once harvested! I think it’s showing signs that’s it is going to be an early/ harder winter! Ty told me that he had a 21 Fahrenheit night in east Texas! And on the gulf it was 25f!!!!!!

be patient and let the bunch fill out.

its usually take about 3-4 months to ripen in Florida but it also depends the variety and conditions.

May take an extra month if we get cold

As you may already know, Manzanos can be almost completely dark on the outside to the point of throwing away and boom! its perfect to eat lol!

I don't think its a manzano.

keep us updated

I think you might have nailed it Greenie!!!! The test finger ripened after maybe five days and it definitely wasn’t manzano😭 had a somewhat orange interior and tasted kinder like a plaintain.

Well, finally, a banana ripened on the Bunch! can’t post pics now, but maybe tonight. Will probably harvest the whole thing in a couple days so the HORRIBLE neighbor doesn’t harvest them.

Cut the tops of all and leave only about 2 foot.

Get a pick and shovel end start working around the mat until you get into the main plant.

Loosen the soil until the full corms pops out

Break roots , move with hands etc...

Have fun 🤪

What are you thinking to replace with?

Thinking of replacing it with the real manzano banana. Thanks for the tips!
