Anybody growing a Mahoi (Double)?

Please share any info about the Mahoi if you are. Does it mature fast? Is the fruit similar to Dwarf Cavendish? How many fruit per bunch? Is it true the double bunch happens in the second year? Any information will be helpful.
Thanks

I know for a fact that the double bunch doesn't happen until the second year, but if you're lucky you might get three bunches.

I've not yet grown one out all the way, but at two-three feet tall you can't tell them from a dwarf cav at all. I think I may replace my big ice cream with a double. That would be pretty cool!

I think the double bloom is definitely appealing. I just found some cool pics posted by member capthof. Here is one he posted.

Mine is healthy, but it is the slowest grower that I have. I think they are pretty
much like a dwarf Cavendish, they even have the blood spots on them when small,
but mine has lost most of them.

The one being sold as Double Mahoi in the trade is just a mutant Dwarf Cavendish and so can't be much different from DC, aside from throwing double bunches. Apparently, the real Hawaiian Mahoi (actually Mahoe) is a different plant in the Maoli-Pōpō‘ulu Group that is now extinct. FYI!

Re: Anybody growing a Mahoi (Double)?

My t.c double mahoi is sitting there for a year now.

So this morning I made a big hole.

You can see that my soil is kind of poor and non productive. Poor soil contains low nutrients. It is low fertility soil.

So I made a mix of topsoil, organic compost, cow manure compost and bone meal.

Its ready... going to be planted this evening.

Does the real Hawaiian Mahoi (actually Mahoe) produce double bunches? Is it also a dwarf?

Re: Anybody growing a Mahoi (Double)?

How do the harvests of Doubles and DC's compare in terms of weight?

If the Double's bunches are each the same weight as a DC bunch, then the Double would produce twice as many pounds of fruit as the DC.

If the Double's bunches are each half as heavy as a DC bunch, then the two plants would produce a similar number of pounds of fruit.

If the Double's bunches are somewhere in between those two relative values, then the Double would produce more pounds of fruit than the DC, but not twice as much.

Anyone know?

What I'm really trying to figure out is whether the Double is actually more productive than a DC, or whether the Double has the same total productivity but it's just divided between the multiple bunches.

This type of thing interest me. The real mahoi is extinct because of why? Is it due to bunchy to virus? When I was in Hawaii for work a few years ago on the big island the banana virus was really reeking havoc there. If so is it possible that someone may have this plant on the mainland? How long has the double mahoi been extinct? Hope I did not hijack this thread too much. Thanks,
Paulo

My Double Mahoi is also the slowest grower I have. Not sure if it's too close to a competing and very happy Williams. I bought another small one recently and it's doing better.

I'm not sure, perhaps Gabe can fill us in, but my understanding is that many of the traditional Hawaiian bananas, have gone extinct or become rare because they were not valued enough in recent times (last several decades) for people to keep propagating them. For a plant that cannot propagate itself sexually (no seeds), if something kills the mat and no one has removed suckers and planted them elsewhere, that's it. I imagine it had something to do with the loss of traditional Hawaiian customs, which has more recently turned around.
