Default Another Squirrel thread

I did a search on old threads on squirrels to find out the potential for them eating the banana's. What it seems is that they have a taste for the 'pups'. I'm wondering about the fruit.
We have major squirrels. I have a very mature Jelly palm in the yard and the squirrels are just thriving thank you very much. The tree produces 3, 4, 5, sometimes more clusters (100's of berries on each) of fruit back to back. So I can't remove a food source.
Our outdoor cat is an excellent ratter, and has taken a squirrel or two in the past, but I know based on her appearence that sometimes they don't go without a fight.
And we even have a good bunch of snakes.
So we have the predator deterrent, yet they are here in good numbers.
What about the fake owls?
I'm just wondering is it going to be a crap shoot?

OhI caught this shot in the spring

Sailfish,
Squirrel is awfully good eatin' with dumplings!!!! I used to squirrel hunt as a kid back in Mid TN, and I loved squirrel and dumplings... Anyway, this method takes awhile but has proven effective in my parent's neighbors yard. He uses a "varmit" trap that catches them alive and he transports them out into the country... After several trips the uncaught squirrels seemed to have relocated to another area and he only sees one or two a day and they don't seem to stay long...
Plastic owls also seem to be somewhat effective...

If you move to Pt St Lucie, Fla where I am you won't see any squirells. We have resident bobcats. And so, no racoons either.

The black racer snake in your photo we have. When they show up in the pool enclosure I grab 'em and relocate them to the empty lots adjacent to my property. They eat all the small stuff. Love your snakes, they take care of all the bobcat light work.

Oh, I almost forgot, we also have great horned owls that show up once in a while as well as little screetch owls. The screetchies perch on the frence in the dark, and when I give the dog her last walk, they really freak her out when their talons rip off the fence as they take off. They wait until we are on top of them; feisty little buggers! I love Florida.

I live in eastern NC and had to travel to TX. I ordered a bbq sandwich and had to ask for some vinigar after they brought it out. It took a little looking but it made the sandwich so much better. Its hard to beat eastern NC bbq.

Pt St Lucie and Ft Pierce each have one good BBQ joint. Smokeys in PSL puts a bottle of sauce on the table labeled NC BBQ sauce. It's vinegar based, and close to the real thing, but you can't beat Bubba's in Charlotte, NC. And Bubba's slaw.......not to be duplicated any where else.

Dale's in Ft Pierce is also good and both make a good tomato based home made sauce.

If anybody visits Charlotte, be sure to check out Bubba's.

Now, back to the tree rats. My wife just told me she saw one run across our front lawn yesterday. Oh nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Does the vinegar mask the bad taste of NC bbq

I have lived in FL for years and never met another squirrel hunter.
We hunted them all the time in MI.

So do the squirrels eat the banana fruit?

I have several squirrels that roam my backyard, but they have never bothered my nanners... Then again, I have a dog that loves to chase them back into neighbors yards, so that helps...

Saw another tree rat running along the top or the fence yesterday.

Guess the bobcats are on vacation.

Two of my mats are due to pop the flag leaf soon. It's like the tree rat invaders have sent out a forward observer to mark locations, enemy strength (me and the dog), and report back to TRHQ required forces and TO & E required to attack the objective -- my first fruit!! Am I getting paranoid, or what?

Need to call Rent a Critter and see how much for a bobcat. This is the first time squirrels have shown up on my land in the 2.5 years I've been here.

How much vacation time do bobcats get anyhow?

I have a few families of squirrels nearby,( the neighbor feeds them peanuts ) and they are in my yard daily. I've never had any issues with them bothering my bananas or pineapples, plants or fruit! The only nuisance I can attribute to them is removing the peanut plants that constantly emerge from the mulch in the beds. They do chew the crap out of my avocado tree though!

Avocado is my next step. Anybody know of a good tasting dwarf type? My space is limited. Don't tell the tree rats.

I forgot about that. Your right, they love avocado's. Last year I had a bumper year, and they were chewing like crazy. I think that might explain the explosion in growth of the bushy tailed rat's.

Sounds as if I might have too much of a 'natural' food supply to rid them.
I have decided however to get a super-soaker and hang out on my porch
