Default Another lesson learned

Don't let pups get bigger around than your leg before separating. I will get the other behemoth tomorrow.

Why separate???? Once the pstem blooms it dies or after 3 or 4 years of not blooming the pstem will die. That piece of corm you cut off helps to make the main corm bigger & stronger. You likely cut off near 1/2 of the existing corm. .... If you separate, do it when the pup is 18" to 2ft tall.

I have another monster and 2 more smaller (for now). Come by and take a look. I assure you 1/2 of THAT corm wasn't removed. The base of the main plant is only about 12" in diameter. That plant is a freak of nature.

Only 12" .... I've has several as large as a 5 gal bucket at the base. You need to give more fertilizer.

Maybe you have special 5 gallon buckets hahahaha

"Standard 5-gallon pails made by United States Plastic Corporation are 14.5 inches high, 11.91 inches in diameter at the top and 10.33 inches in diameter at the bottom. The buckets are slightly tapered for ease of stacking and separation"

It really wasn't that heavy. It was about 42" of p-stem. Maybe 20 lbs tops. Healthy as the dickens but the main plant was .08" bigger than a 5 gallon bucket....

The weight wasn't so bad but carefully hacking it off was the chore. it's incredible what goes on under the ground.

Looks like the 5-gallon bucket is the universal unit of measurement here on this forum.
It's all I see to compare bunch size

I guess we can't really say 'Banana for scale'

That's a monster pup Strick!!

Thanks and those things slept like babies all winter.

And speaking of 5 gallon buckets, I learned even more today Who knew that the diameter was slightly LESS than 12". Now we all know and us neophytes can talk sizing in less technical layman's terms.

It's one of Lou's pups, whatever he is. Sold as a Blue Java from FHN but that's pretty doubtful. Maybe this year we'll know for sure.

You are correct .... my bad .... I've a couple that were bigger than that. there is a post somewhere on the forum about the size. I think it was 14" or 16" dia.

Anyway a pstem at that size wasn't long from budding/flowering.

FHN has never had Blue Java plants. all come from agristarts which does not have it either.

i've removed some big pups like that with zero issues on the mother producing good rack in the not so distant future. for sure there is some impact but I believe the mother recovers fairly quickly
