I am new at this. I have had some ornicos(don't know how you spell it) for about 5 years, they have fruited three times, I divide them up and around the yard, and have added:
an ornamental??
Zebrina
Basjoo
Siam Ruby
Dwarf Cav.

now I'm trying to thin out the huge mass of the original Ornicos, and want to start some pots of them,and pass some to friends. IF I DIG IT UP AND DON'T GET ANY ROOT, IS THERE HOPE for the banana? Do I throw them into the compost pile, or give them some TLC?

well thanks, I have some in a thing of water, It is about 5 of them. I hope some surive.

If you leave them in water, they will probably just rot away. Plant them in a pot, give them a drink of water and let them dry out. Then water again. Do the same until the roots develop.

This has worked for me for nearly all of the pups I have cut out from my Ice Creams.......

First, spelling is Orinoco. Second, do not give up because of no roots. I show a drawing here of what happened to one of my mother plants. (Camera was broken, at the time.)

The plant was found broken off. I cut it off to about a foot, and put it in a pot. The green/white center pushed out about an inch or two, and then stopped. The pot was placed in the basement and, after several months, the main stem rotte, and fell over, but a vigorous pup appeared.

I use to remove pups all the time without any roots. As long as I divided it with a chunk of the corm at the base, the roots will start to grow. And these were small pups under 1 foot and I planted them into styrofoam cups to get them started. The roots filled after about a month after which I gave away.

Great! Thanks for the spelling correction I'll have to remember 3 o's in Orinoco. Yes I was wondering about root rot in water, I will plant them today, and will baby them up in the sick bay, One of them is 3-4 foot tall. I really sounded like a sailor when i cut that one, not very lady like!!!! The others are less than a foot tall!
Now that the hurricane force winds, and monsoon have stopped i can get out in the yard this weekend, I hope!

Musa 'Orinoco' is named after the river of the same name in South America; Brazil, I believe. Good luck getting your pups to root.

thanks B88 I always like to learn little banana facts! Sooooo bananas i divided without root will probably die right? BUT pups will shoot up hopefully, am I understanding everyone correctly?
