The exact mechanisms involved in off-types are still not totally understood, but what we do is that it is often the result of sloppy TC work, when a lab does not do it's due diligence to reinitiate new lines from field verified true-to-type stock. Some cultivars seem more prone to generating off-types than others, but with AgriStarts it seems to be widespread enough that it's almost certainly due to their practices, and not inherent to specific varieties.
interesting, thank you for your answer.

so I guess armed with that, that there is no chance that her pups will never be true to type.

so if I were a large scale farmer what would I do with here pups?

If you were farming commercially you would avoid getting banana planting material from AgriStarts to begin with. But do you what would you do in terms of management, or in terms of propagation?

You can prune off the unwanted suckers, better to do it early and often, and no need to have done in a way they are transplantable.

If you're trying to propagate, you can do it more carefully and keep them, but if I was growing these commercially (which I am, actually), and I had these tall plants mixed in, I would not propagate from them. I would remove all the off-types and replace with true-to-type plants.

The only caveat to the above is unless the mutation of the off type is beneficial in some way. Quite a rew of the varieties today are mutations of other varieties.
