Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
I just bought an ice cream.... and..... it was from the fruit people in manatee council thingy today.
... HOLY CRAP! There is no mistaking these guys. They look extremely different than any banana I have ever seen. They are blue! I mean a blue green of course but still. These guys look so different than a namwa, which is very Pinked out in the ribs and stalk. I finally got my ice cream today!!! Hell yeah! They may not taste the best, but the work it takes to find a !!REAL ICE CREAM!! makes it awesome To finally have one.

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
I'm doubting my blue Java now. Most photo id are so distant it makes it hard to compare. I have had to change my listed names so many times.

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
Update:
I called Agristarts today. The lady informed me that they have blue java, but have not gotten it up to speed so they have not sold any. The ice cream variety they list is tall namwah. The forum is correct. I emailed this info back to Green Earth Publishing who insisted I (and the forum) were wrong. Thanks everyone. |

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
I looked at their website and noticed many false things. When you don't know it's easy to get lost. I'm just getting oriented myself.

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
Orinoco = Texas Star/Cali Gold
Blue Java = Tall Namwa Those seem to be the most mixed up ones. I bought my namwa as a Blue Java. I love them so far. They get really tall and I would prefer the dwarf Namwa if anyone has any to sell/trade pm me.

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
I have texas star. It seems to be an orinoco form but unique to itself. I have several orinoco forms. Tall orinoco gets about 20 feet tall. Texas star is not that by far.

I have offered them the "real" Blue Java and so have other members with correctly identified plants, but they are and never were interested in it. That is okay with me, but the biggest problem is that they knowingly still sell "Namwah" as "Blue Java", which is absolutely NOT okay. Agristarts or companies like Green Earth in denial about the problem do not seem very trustworthy. |

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
My understanding is that they replaced the incorrect "Blue Java" with the real deal "Blue Java" last year and it's just a matter of some time for them to get up to speed.
It would be sad if the incorrect "Blue Java" was actually their best Awak type and will now be discontinued for the real deal "Blue Java". Quote:

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
Sorry but I won't trust anyone selling them in FL unless I can see the parent in bloom. Period. You can buy Ice Creams all day long here for cheap and for not at all cheap. I won't purchase any TCs because Argristarts has polluted the market and is the likely source of not just musas but other plants they propagate. Thankfully I have no problem nurturing roadkill pups/cuttings, taking my chances on flea/farmers market offerings, cosying up to other area gardeners and taking samples from underutilized (and I do ensure it's not being used) land. BTW, I hope they're not one of the crooks offering Blue Java seeds on e-bay...

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
I didn't look very hard to find an offering (but they've been there). I did find this with a quick peek. Dwarf Cavendish Banana 5 Seeds Musa Acuminata | eBay. Hirt's was located 2 doors from me when I lived in OH; it was once a very respected seed/plant distributor. Now? Sheesh! And the only review is someone saying nothing happened...duh! Sad, so very sad.

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
Hirts has stollen my photography and profited from it. I called them and they were rude and disrespectful.

Re: Agristarts and Blue Java
Hirt's was started by the grandfather as a florist shop I believe. The son expanded and the grandson has gone further. I've met the latest family issue. I will make no other comments except to say that I'm not surprised there was an issue and I'm sorry it happened to you. (I did, very carefully, purchase a few heirloom tomato plants there; the only seeds I purchased were duds. I know that fig varieties other than possibly Chicago Hardy are not reliable in zone 5 yet they sold Magnolias and others as easy growers. Darn, I said more but this is not the only "local expert" nursery I've visited in a few states which sells plants that cannot survive yet pushes the buyer to believe the fault for failure is theirs. Having climbed onto the soapbox....I've found a very nice lady nearby who sells flowers and herbs for beyond cheap (she's licensed and proudly organic); she won't sell anything she hasn't field tested. And despite charging $1 for a quart (no more than $3), she guarantees her plants--bring it back for refund or replacement if it croaks so she can figure out why. She doesn't have banana seeds for sale...hmmm)
