Aeae history
Hi folks,
I know the origins of many 'Hawaiian' bananas are shrouded in mystery, and Aeae/koa'e/manini is no exception, but does anyone have any references on the subject? Particularly interested in the claim that this variety was reserved for the nobility. The only things I've found so far are: Higgins J. E. (1904) The banana in Hawaii. Honolulu (HI): Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station. 51 p. (Bulletin No. 7). Pope, W. T. (1926) Banana Culture in Hawaii, Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station Bulletin 55 ... both of which are very sparse. I *think* Kepler & Rust address this in their book and find no evidence for the royalty idea, but I'm still waiting on my copy. Thanks! |
