AeAe getting to big

Re: AeAe getting to big
I wouldn't let them get below 60°F (15°C), that will hopefully ensure they will continue growing. You want them to have a smooth transition if you want them to keep growing, if its getting too cold too frequently, they may go dormant.

Re: AeAe getting to big
Mike, Where are you located? I know they grow quite well in Kansas. So if you want to ship one my way I'd be more than happy to help ya out. Ha ha! They should do better outdoors than inside for sure. They look healthy but a lil skinny from lack of light. I honestly don't know a lot about Ae Ae, so I may not be much help. I can tell you that banana stop growing when temps hit 57F or lower. I have mine outside and we've hit temps as low as 35 and they've pulled through but they are not Ae Ae's. Also be careful when bringing them out. Ease them into the light and allow them to adjust. Hope this helps. I'm sure someone with an Ae Ae will charm in and help ya out-Nate

Re: AeAe getting to big
Thanx for the advice i just wanted to make sure they make it through the summer to see how big I can get them to grow. After this summer if they are to big I am going to donate them to the garfield park conservatory here in chicago. I already spoke to the head grower there and hes excited to get them. He already got the space where they will go ready.

Re: AeAe getting to big
I have had these since fall. I didnt plan on keeping it until it pups. If these two pup it will be removed and placed with the other in the conservatory.

im sure the head of the dept is excited about getting an aeae! i would be doing cartwheels. lol! that is awesome that you are willing to share some of you lovely nanas with others in your city. do you have an escape clause in your paper work ? that is if they dont take care of them that you get them back and them not let the nanas go to anyone else but you? might want to think about that. you have done a beautiful job on you ae aes. makes me green and white with banana envy! lol!

Re: AeAe getting to big
Tropicallvr those are musa basjoo. I hope they survive in there new home. I have had banana's in that spot before some almost 2 stories tall by fall but none have made it through the winter.
Dean and misskitty38583 The conservatory is massive and they should grow to there full potential. I did tell them that the only thing I would like is the fruit if and when they bloom. If they pup they are going remove them and use them to start a bigger population of adults. Also there will be a little tag say donated by the Jaramillo family which my kids should get a kick out of. |

Re: AeAe getting to big
I don't drool over Ae Ae any longer, I just fret. I splurged and bought three last year. They are still all either in my heated lit shop or in my greenhouse, but I may plant one outside soon if I have time to put up a screen for wind protection and shade.
One is doing very well, one is okay, and one required surgery earlier this week! I think I may have over-watered it as the top bent over and died. So I cut off the pseudostem, removed it from the pot, washed off the soil, removed any dead roots (there were still many good-looking roots), soaked it for 3 minutes in a solution of Phytosan 20, let it dry, and then re-planted it in a pot with soil that had been soaked in the same Phytosan 20 solution. Wish me luck!!! |
Re: AeAe getting to big
