Default A'ea'e Breeding Program

The A'ea'e is a very female fertile cultivated variety that will easily produce viable seeds when pollinated.

I'll be sharing offshoots of some of these new non-variegated varieties produced from using the A'ea'e as the female.

The new variegated varieties produced will be released at a later date.

These new non-variegated banana varieties will probably have little value and I'll be shipping them before I flower their mother so there won't be much information available.

This is the first one that will be made available this Spring.

A'ea'e 'AAB' x variegated wild Golden Tiger 'AA'

This little a'ea'e will be ready to hand pollinate in about 8 months.

Breeding with short cycle bananas like the a'ea'e will hopefully produce new varieties that are semi cold hardy with even shorter cycle times. My main interest is still in producing new variegated varieties but I will be growing out a higher percentage of the non-variegated seedlings.

I recently found this variegated banana seedling growing wild. It's probably a Golden Tiger, there are thousands of these weeds growing all over the farm.

That’s cool looking… pretty neat to find bananas growing freely like that.

Initially it was pretty cool but these invasive variegated weeds from the other side of the world quickly became problematic.

When I wrote "thousands" I intentionally underestimated their numbers by many zeros.

It only took a few seconds of searching this morning to find the bananas in these 2 photos and there was one that I will collect and pot up later. There's probably over 50 banana seedlings in the wide angle shot and if you click on the photo it will enlarge.

Wow now I see them. I have never heard of this variety before and how did they end up on your property? Do you have pictures of any mature ones and flower/fruit? Thanks.

Probably from birds or bats and the original plant I collected wasn't even variegated.

The only difference between a natural hybrid and a 'synthetic or man-made' hybrid is how the pollen was applied.

If the seed was produced from a wild mother plant the seedling would need to be grown and exhibit significant differences from the mother to determine if it's a new variety or a subspecies.

If the mother plant was a cultivar then the seedling is automatically a new variety without needing it to be grown for proof.

I cleaned that spot up a little better and there's a lot more than 50 seedlings.

Some people find it difficult to get these seeds to germinate while others find it incredibly easy.

Man that is so cool and there is a ton of them growing there. I would be worried about stepping on them or mowing them down. You should pick an area and let a bunch grow up and fruit! It would be newt keep us updated with how long it takes them to put size on just for fun. If you ever plan to send out some seedlings please let me know.

Makes sense on natural hybrid and man made.

A plant with a bunch probably blew over during the last hurricane and that's the results. The seeds were just laying on the surface and most of them sprouted after I cleaned the area up which might have to do with the direct sunlight they received.

It's much easier for me to ship the seeds rather than the seedlings.

Or like you said animals spread the seeds around. Never grew bananas from seeds before. But have grown some tissue culture bananas and blackberries.

Send me a pm and let me know about the seeds. Thanks.
