Default Ae banana not doing well,,,HELP!!!!

Hi for some odd reason many of my bananas are growing new banana plants out of the p stem of the adult or larger banana any ideas would be great seems to always happen in the fall when I bring my nanners in for the winter!! and my Ae is starting to do the same thing first it looks like the bottom on the p stem is rotting away than the bottom of the p stem starts to swell and out comes SOMETIMES a new banana growing right out of the p stem of the parent plant. This only seems to happen to my bananas that are 1-1and a half inch diameter in stem size.

I am no expert, but it looks to me that the mother pstem has been abandoned by the corm and is pushing out a new pstem.

My guess (it is hard to tell from the photos - they are blurry on my machine here) is that when you transplanted the plant, you planted it too deep and the mother pstem is rotting from to much exposure to water with the dead material at the bottom.

Just a guess....

Jason,
Your plants are "abandoning" that larger stem due to some kind of damage or problem. Either you squeezed it too hard or it became broken inside when you were handling them, or the old stem got frosted before you brought it in or some kind of damage happened to it. The corm is detecting that it's not viable, so it's putting it's energy elsewhere.

I have seen this before. They will be fine. If they appear to be getting trapped inside the old p-stem, you can perform surgery and slit the side of the old p-stem with a razor or scalpel. They will be just fine.

My Ae-Ae did this several weeks after it was partially blown over by Ike, but it started coming out of the side of the pstem at about a height of around 3 1/2 feet or so. I did as Scott mentions above and slit the side to finish freeing it and then cut off the old part of the pstem, being careful to leave the still viable part. It is growing fine today, though with a slight lean.
