Hmmm...I have a question. When a pup resorts to its full green color,is it still an Ae Ae? Also, will the pups of the all green Ae Ae be variegated, or all green from then on?
Deep Thought....

From what I understand there are all green and variegated Ae Ae's. An all green pup will always be all green but I'm not sure if it's pups would be all green.

All green 'Ae Ae' are called 'Green Ae Ae', but interestingly enough they end up being a very similar plant to 'Popoulu' in that perhaps 'Ae Ae' was originally a sport of 'Popoulu'. 'Green Ae Ae' will make only green pups, once the plant reverts back to green, the whole plant does, this includes pups.

An all green pup can sport back to variegated. I know this from personal experience.

And all green 'Ae Ae' reverting back to variegation is very rare, and is most likely a seperate event not related to the fact that it was once variegated, plants sometimes do mutate to variegation, this is how the first 'Ae Ae' came about. Another possibility is that it still had the mutant cells within the meristem but not enough to show, but due to an environmental change they became more appearent. In any case, one shouldnt buy 'Green Ae Ae' expecting it to someday make variegated pups.

They are a little hard to find because not many people carry them from what I've seen. They're a little finicky to grow from what I've read, and they're pretty expensive at the moment due to not many being on the market. I'd wait to see if this variety hits a TC lab and comes down in price some. Unless you've an extra $100 or so and a desire for a little gamble.
I'm keeping my eye on Ae Ae availability too and seeing where it goes in the next couple of years tho my environment here in Texas may be a bit too extreme for it...Be well, Mike |

I was not advising anyone to purchase a green Ae Ae hoping it would sport back to variegated.
The pup I had was given top me by a professional grower from a variegated matte. He lamented that in his personal experience the green pups never turned variegated. I kept the pup in a pot for several months and dumped my coffee grounds on it, after a few months (when it reached about three feet) the pup started sending out variegated leaves. I grew the matte for about six years and received numerous variegated and a few all white pups (no green ones).

TCing bananas is a cinch, if AeAe could be TCed consistantly someone would have done it by now. I remeber when ele ele and M. lasopcarpa etc. were waiting list bananas as well. Now they are as cheap as the others. If I could get my hands on one I might TC it just to see exactly what happens. Keith

May be due to a change in pH?

Coffee grounds make good fertilizer. I save all of mine and dump them around my plants, filter and all. I really don't have enough to worry about hurting the plants. Starbucks will give you all of their used coffee grounds upon request, BTW.

From what I understand Coffee grounds will acidify your soil over a period of time when used in large amounts. Ae Ae's like acidic soil and it's said they get more white when growing in acidic soil so it makes sense to throw your grounds around the plant help adjust the ph if you want more variegation.
