Ae-Ae on eBay
We haven't talked about this guy an a while. But since I saw this just now, I was surprised to see that he's not just selling seeds, he's actually selling an Ae-Ae PLANT. And for $99!!! Probably from his alleged Ae-Ae seeds!
Here's the link: Rare Variegated Banana * Musa aeae variegate - 8 in. - eBay (item 200204042106 end time Mar-07-08 02:25:10 PST) O.K. experts, what's the verdict? Phony or real? Notice that, that's the same photo in all his previous seed ads. |

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
I reported him too Jason. I tried to flag his stuff as a fake product but they continue to let that moron sell those seeds. For all those people know they are getting marigold seeds, as for the plant, he could get that picture anywhere, and send them a variegated canna or something... not good.

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
The people who have complained to eBay about this particular seller are in no way limited to people who like bananas. Bromeliad people have complained about them, epiphyllum people, orchid people... almost every type of item they sell has generated some sort of complaint. One of the main seems to be poor quality, then followed by using pilfered images on auctions. eBay seems to just turn a blind eye.
|
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
Yeah I contacted him also and got some sort of rant in response, they should really make him quit selling those Ae Ae seeds. Every time they are up for bid there are a few people driving up the cost of the fakey seeds.
|
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
Ebay doesn't care, they just want the money. I agree that if he has a variegated plant to ship it's not going to be an Ae Ae Banana, but most likely a Stuttgart Canna. The picture is probably something he found from another auction or on the internet. Buyer beware!

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
All about money for eBay. Ebay sucks. Used to be a great place to get some nice things but not much anymore. Don't get me wrong there are some real good sellers on ebay, but its all about money these days. As for the plant he is selling. I would not buy it. F the guy!!! :woohoonaner: LOL!

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
I just emailed the gentleman and praised him for his work in hybridization of the AeAe. I told him I would like to see pics of the seeds that are up for auction. I will see if I get a cordial response from him and let you know...
Here is a copy of the email I sent him: Dear mantisbee, This is truly amazing. Before I place a bid on AeAe seeds that I did not know existed, I would like to see what I am bidding on. Do you have pics of the seeds that are up for auction? Thank you for your efforts, - randy4ut |
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
Bait him up Randy. Good work. Maybe you should ask him how he did it.

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
Heh just do a google search for "mantisbee" there is a lot of complaints.

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
would it take 2 years for a plant from sead to only get that big?
|
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
Good luck even getting a responce from mantisbee. I'm fixing to report him/her for not responding to e-mails. I purchased two bromeliads and an air plant and haven't received it, going on two weeks now!
I just decided to go ahead and get his/her contact info and make an attempt at calling!!! |

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
I almost want to start a listing titled something like "Variegated Banana Musa aeae ae ae seed *INFO*" and point him out in the listing. Thats really just about the only way un knowing people to realize those seeds are not going to grow an AE AE.
Probably violates ebay's TOS. EDIT: He does point everything out in his auction though so hes not doing anything wrong, Morally though that's another story. |

Somebody beat you to it! Steve A. (varig8 on this forum) did that very thing, but eBay made him take it down because he wasn't actually selling anything. So he decided to sell a pamphlet or something with it, and that worked. Don't know how long he ran it for, but I though it was pretty funny and ingenuitive. |
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
I THINK THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO BUY THE SO CALLED AEAE SEEDS AND THEN LEAVE HIM A BAD COMMENT THAT THE SEEDS ARENT TRUE AND BLAH BLAH :p BUT THEN AGAIN I DONT THINK ANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THAT
|
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
You need to be able to prove they are not true by growing them really and you have 90 days to leave feedback. The chances of getting what ever musa he is selling to germinate in 90 is pushing it.
Had I not joined this forum I would have been another sucker and bought some from him. He is well known on here now and word of mouth will spread so maybe less people will buy from him. There must be something ebay can do to stop sellers like him ripping off buyers. I tried to sell a rubber M16 rifle from a film set and they were on me like a ton of bricks. |
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
I was checking on the supplier of Variegated Banana "Florida" and found out that someone had bought a plant from him recently. And at a very good price, too! Just $49. I couldn't believe the winner of the auction - "mbee52"! And he has a whopping 100% positive rating for 2 feedbacks. Does that name look familiar?
Here is the link: *****MUSA VARIEGATED "Florida Vol.1" Banana Leave Rare! - eBay (item 370055519652 end time Jun-01-08 08:56:22 PDT) So maybe his seeds are actually from these bananas? Variegated, though not Ae' Ae. |
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
By the way, (as far as I could find) "Mantisbee" is NOT a registered eBay user any longer.
Am I correct? |

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
It says Mbee52 is from NYunited states. Is that where mantisbee came from?
he has only been trading 8 months:rolleyes: Sounds like one and the same to me |
Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
'Mantisbee' is the guy who sold all the AeAe seeds. I even asked him personally, but I guess messages on eBay get deleted after a certain period of time?
eBay My World - mantisbee "No longer a registered user" His feedback rating went to 92.8%, so I guess he figured it was his time to go!!! |

Re: Ae-Ae on eBay
You are confusing the seller of this plant which comes from thailand with somebody that purchased it and lives here in the U.S. If he has plants that produce seeds why would he purchase this plant and then have to wait until it fruits to sell seeds (if the plant even produces seeded fruit). Maybe this buyer only wants to grow a variegated banana plant.

On the other hand, if he does get seeds from his new plants, wouldn't he now be able to vindicate himself with a proof that his seeds were possible by showing a cross section of the variegated fruit that contained the seeds? Over the past couple of years, he has been alleging that he has Ae-Ae seeds. The notion that he has seeds from the Ae-Ae is absurd. I would think that most of the members of this organization will agree with me on that. I will not argue with the notion that he wants to grow a variegated banana plant. I will argue that the Buyer of the Florida plant is the same as the Seller of the purported Ae-Ae seeds. |
