Advice on LED growlights/ do bananas require full spectrum
I have looked up on YouTube and the org on info about this, but i can't find what i need.
I have been using LED growlights for the last couple of years now, over winter months, as i wanted my bananas to keep growing. I looked at other type of lights, but LED was for me. Now the issue that I have got is. I was told blue and red was all i needed, so initially I got a 60w red and blue led bulbs, over the winter months the leaves grow, but the plants won't pick up height, leaves just stack on top of each other, there is no growth on the petiole on each leaf, its not a heat issue as temperatures are not dropped less than 22c. This year i purchased 100w red and blue LED bulb. I assumed the bulb power need to be more, but i am having the same results. I have now read up that i possibly need full spectrum 100w LED bulbs, as bananas need more than just red and blue. If anyone can give advice on this, i would really appreciate it. |

Full spectrum works best I think, a daylight bulb is full spectrum.

GO TO THE CANNIBIS forums. The growing conditions are the same and there is much much more information on how to grow your plants. Fellas that post in the forums have a lot to gain:08: The DYI videos product links, are exellent . Me ... full spectrum 65k spiral and tube cfl and full spectrum led for my plants. My coverage is a 12x12 grow room and a conditioned 16x50 grow area and a cool garage. Note .....this is enough to keep the plants alive and not tossing leaves every day. Absolutely not enough to hold a flower to go to fruit. Lights will always cause your plants to grow tighter with seemingly smaller leaves.....normal However..Check out the roots the container that your plant is in...And you will go sheeeeet. Two current posting forum members who I know grow under lights are Subsonicdrone and Geissene...both have plants under lights. These fellas are good Iowa.....your doing good stuff over there..check out the fellas growing weed though:) But at the end of the day....I am still finding this stuff out. |

I was hoping you would reply to this thread, as you have a lot of experience with hydroponics and growlights, with growing bananas in pots. I didn't want to go down the growlights road, but i realised if i want to grow the more beautiful varieties, which are more Tropical, then simply putting a banana in a warm south facing room, is just not going to be enough. Looking at other YouTube videos, it seems most of the plants that people grow, mostly require the blue and red spectrum. I guess this is not the case with bananas, as with whats happening with mine, no petiole growth, only leaf growth even with 100w bulbs. I will be looking at the cannabis videos. Thankyou for the info and recommendation Mike. |

On my Banana's inside I use daylight 6500 cfl's to winter them over until they go back outside. They grow some but are mostly dormant in my 60ºF dimly light basement. I use them when starting any bulbs or seeds for the next year and they work good. My wife's house plants are supplemented with daylight cfl's and they do very well. A grow light bulb is full spectrum, a daylight bulb 6500 I find at a cheaper price than grow light bulbs.

Mushtaq,
I think you was trying to do a "disco fever" Nana grow room!.....Growing and dancing at the same time!.......:ha::ha::ha::ha::ha:.......You know I can't help it bro!....LOL!.....Joking aside, I don't have to much experience using full spectrum grow lights, because of my growing environment/conditions, except using them on my TC plants, in which worked awesome!....As some of the more experienced forum members on this topic suggest, I think you should give a try to full spectrum grow lights!....Considering the factor that your Nanas are going to be inside in your house most of the time due to your growing environment/conditions!.... :2723::bananarow::2723: |

Hector I was trying the John Travolta Saturday Night Fever disco thing hoping it would catch on :ha: :ha: :ha: Thankyou for the advice my friend. I will be ordering some 100k full spectrum growlights, hopefully they do the trick, since my bananas don't go into the greenhouse until May. :nanadrink: |

.
How do you find your bananas, growing in these cfl lights, regarding leaf and petiole growth. They grow slow but well, when we get closer to spring I'll start watering them more and they wake right up. |

Re: Advice on LED growlights/ do bananas require full spectrum
Just adding my 2 cents. I have plants in my unheated basement (55-60F) that grow with LEDs that are majority red/blue. There are about 15% of the LEDs that are full spectrum. The ~400w light covers a 4x4' grow area and growth is fairly slow due to temperature and watering only every 2+ weeks. I've never had a flower indoors and I usually just use this grow area for sustaining small plants. I have seen pstem growth of about one foot but usually just on smaller plants. I would imagine your total light wattage would need to be over 1000W to see significant growth. Personally, I must wait for spring and move plants outside since I don't want to see my electricity bill get too high! :)

Thanks for your input on growlights, interesting to know that you need 1000 watt LEDs for significant growth, are your red and blue growlights full spectrum, if not what is the growth like on leaf and petiole, on your bananas. |
Re: Advice on LED growlights/ do bananas require full spectrum
My red and blue LEDs are 660/460nm and contain no full spectrum content. The leds are 5Ws each and I have 80 of them on a panel. There are 12 full spectrum LEDs spread across the panel.
I get a new leaf every 2 or 3 weeks. The leaves look normal and transpire a lot for a week after watering. I really don't push them and keep my soil very dry otherwise I'll get fungus gnats and other bugs. I also run the light for 12 hours on / 12 hours off. You can adjust the height of your light above the plants to see if it helps. I keep my light 2-3' above my plant leaves, basically out of convenience. Erik |
