I'm watching this.
Planting density is very interesting.

currently I'm trying a double row of kandrian and d namwah
kandrian at 10ft spacing and d namwah 5 foot spacing
town 3 ft apart.

Not quite as adventurous as yours though

town?

I like the square spacing with the center open, 4', 4.5', or 5', all work and probably even better with an ABB.

I meant rows.
Sometimes spellchecker gets wonky.

My idea was that the leaves overlap with close spacing, BUT kandrian and d namwah can hardly occupy the same vertical space.
ie. d namwah leaves stop 9 ft up or so and kandrian leaves start at 20 ft
canopy under canopy with one north south double row
I'm just making stuff up as I go along.

I'm more concerned with the roots than the leaves, and think leaves are overrated.

This banana had leaves for only 30 days after shooting which is very short, but seems like it filling.

I try to keep leaves for 75% of filling days, but never have the recommended amount at the time of shooting.

Bloomed jun 2

EDIT

Oops, Early Harvest

There are no leaf diseases up here so it gets more crowded.
I always have >10 leaves after shooting.

Will get some counts tomorrow,
Im sure that 17 in the contest is holding 12 and 8-9 will make it till the end.
Hua moa have no less than 9 each.
gravity is the only natural enemy my leaves contend with.

Good point on leaves though, I hadn't considered the reduced leaf area you experience.
sigatoka causes this?
Flying monkies with machetes ?

I've been reading about banana circles. (Circles seem like a waste of space to me so I'm very interested in your "square plan".) Did your bananas flower on the outside? What was your actual spacing? I appears they recommend about 8' in circles and training pups to grow in the same direction.

I found it very interesting that sweet potatoes are suggested as an understory crop. I had some slips I'd grown and no place to put them so I set them beside my DC and they're thriving. (My 1st year garden in "paradise" is death to anything--my butternut squashes--all that grew and that took me playing bee--apparently finished at 5" long--cute minis but not what I expected.)

It's a tic tac toe pattern with the center space being used as a compost pile.
