6+ pups normal?
 

Hi

My lady finger banana is doing quite well. We received 230mm of rain over the last few days. :raftingnaner: I was inspecting them to see how they went which is good, bit of wind damage to the leaves, the soil is not muddy it all ran off quite well.

I have 6 definite pups coming up out of the ground plus another eye that appears to be growing into a pup which you can see in the picture. Is this normal?

I want to plant a couple elsewhere in the yard and give a few away so I want to let them all grow for a bit before removing them.

You're doing something right, that's for sure. Your plant looks really happy.

The lady fingers are thriving but I do have one problem plant that's less than 2 meters from this one my pisang ceylan that keeps putting out bent leaves. I am hoping all this rain spreads out the nutrients and sorts it.

The reason it put out so many pups while so young it that its a TC grown plant. In TC bananas,many buds proliferate early and produce a load of pups on the first cycle. Remove the largest one as its growing really swallow and won't make a good follower. The rest you can leave or remove as needed. It's preferable to leave the deep growing ones and remove all shallow growing ones :)
I would pile some more soil/compost and mulch around that banana too as it apprearing to be growing a little too shallow too.

Looks great! Keep doing what you are doing. You could probably separate the largest one off to increase the number of plants you have. Otherwise, just leave it going as is.

Thanks for the replies. This one isn't a TC it just loves to pup. I added more mulch around the plant a couple of the smaller pups are covered I'm sure they will pop through though. I'll be relocating the largest pup tomorrow.

Some varieties are heavy puppers, others are not. Your plant looks happy.

Moved the largest pup off. Here is a pic :)

I had to use a shovel to remove it, even tho I cut at an angle towards the plant it came up with no roots. Hopefully it survives.

I would cut all the leaves off to improve its chances. Since it has no roots, the leaves will evaporate all the water and the plant won't be able to draw up any more. It will take a few weeks to grow roots, and once it does it will send up new leaves. Ull see the leaves die off very quick anyways, just best to do before the plant loses all that water.

Good idea I did have that thought but didn't end up doing it. Ill pass it on and the leaves might get cut off. Thanks for the tip ill definitely do that next time.

It's fine wether you leave the leafs or cut them,they know how to keep themselves alive and actually draw water from the leafs to inner portions when they need to,they don't let themselves dessicate. I usually leave the leafs on and sometimes,some of the newer leafs survive the transplant :)
The only real enemy to pups is rot. Don't water much after the initial watering for the first week and keep it just moist from the second week till you see growth. Your humid summer should help it survive fine!
