Default 3 Gallon Ensete ventricosum getting set to bloom!

I have no idea how or why it is doing this! It is just over a year old.

Weird, huh?

Anybody ever seen anything like it?

Frank , I was talking about early flowering the other day with Pete. Many plants flower when stressed or damaged .It's the plants way of propagating it's way out of less than ideal conditions .What's happened to you is you have make a Bonsia of the Ensete and the Ensete is saying "Run for the hills kids, there is no room here :-) " . That's my take on it anyway.
Best of Luck with it

Oh , the irony !
I just returned home today and found one of my E . Ventricosum blooming .
It's not in a pot anymore but it's under 6' at the very tip of the highest leaf .
This one sprouted in May / June !

Pete, pretty cool! Or maybe not...if you were hoping for great size!

I donated two of these from the same batch to the UT Gardens this past spring, and they are both blooming right now at about the same height as your is. Weird... I'll try to remember to bring my camera out there and take some pics this week.

Are they TC ? I understand some of the TC chemicals can cause rapid flowering. It's one of the reasons I do not buy TC Bamboo as they are normally abnormal in some way.

Nope, all started from seed from rarepalmseeds.com. Maybe it's this unbelievably hot and dry summer we had? Not sure, but something triggered it, and I'm thinking along the same lines as you when you suggested stress. The ones at the garden look really cool, and might have some viable seed too. They started flowering in August after being planted in May. I was so looking forward to them growing to their massive mature size though. Oh well.

It's a real shame Frank , nothing like a big Ensete for a sense of achievement and grown from seed makes it double good. If the lack of rain keeps up here next year I think we will be on rationed water. Very weird weather , my little girl was worried and could not sleep because of the rain the other night , she is use not used to it anymore , dry dry dry .With luck you will get seed and an start again. My Thia Superbum is getting to a size now , it's getting to the size that I've seen pics of flowering plants. I hope it does not flower , or that it flowers next year and I can get some seed. If one gets fresh seed I guess froming them right away is best ?

How big is your Thai Superbum, Steve? I have an Indian Superbum that is looking really nice right now. Only one seed out of 100, and only 3 weeks after sown! Hope yours holds out till next year.

Don't really know enough about Ensete seeds to say whether fresh is better or not. In some Musa, fresh is better, but some will only sprout after a dormant period. I was at Leu Gardens in Orlando in 2006, and Eric showed me a pile of Ensete glaucum seedlings coming up in one spot. He said that the mother plant had flowered over a year ago, and there was no sign of it ever even being there. So perhaps some Ensete seeds do like a dormancy in the soil. I know enough about Musa and Ensete seeds to know not to give up on them until probably around 2 years or so, but it takes dedication to make sure they don't dry out for 2 years!
