Re: 25 degrees this am
25 degrees was the high here in Milwaukee yesterday. I had to bring in my plants into the basement from the garage last night because the low was 14 and I feared they were going to freeze. Now I have a sore back. My Orinico must weigh about 150 lbs., 7ft of psuedostem, about 9" in diameter, 3 pups attached. I had to leave a blue java out there because it is about 14' tall and I can't get it into the basement. I hope it's ok. I'm trying to leave as many leaves on that I can because I think they will all fruit next year(minus the pups). I'm may have to cut it back to get it to fit. It must weigh over 200 lbs. I hope they lose some weight over the winter or I won't be able to get them back up the stairs.

Re: 25 degrees this am
It was about 10°F here last night after the 2ft of snow, ended up being 45°F in the greenhouse, Im just hoping that when it hits -25°F (which it will eventually), I just dont have any of my plants freeze in the greenhouse!

Re: 25 degrees this am
Keeping my fingers crossed for you, Gabe.
Racer: how many plants did you have to move? I don't have a basement but have been thinking it would be nice to have one for winter naner storage. But your story reminds me how heavy those things get! Have you insulated that Blue Java in the garage at all? saturn |
Re: 25 degrees this am
Last winter was ok because I had put up a canopy that cut off half of the height of the greenhouse and kept all the heat down low, but this year, my 'Rose' grew so much that it is impossible to put up a canopy and it would not even help that much it would be up so high. Last season the 'Rose' only reached about 6ft with the pot and leaves and all, but after this summer its easily pushin 15ft with the leaves and all. We're having enough snow that Im building a wall of packed snow around the outside of the greenhouse to help insulate it, I guess I'll also have to turn up the little space heater on the chilly nights!
But at the very least if it does freeze I'll get a really good idea of cold tolerance on some these guys (especially 'Cali Gold' and yunnanensis). |
