Re: 2019 -Update on My Bananas
Quote:
I believe the drought in April & May was the cause of the wide spacing of the hands and thus only a few hand/fingers made. The fertilizer was there. ... The plant was growing on its internal reserves since there were very little water for uptake by the roots. The hands/fingers were already made by the time the Bud appeared. ... This same Orinoco mat produce the 9 hand bunches in 2017 which I cut back to 6 hands. Pictures and thread can be seen here: Surprise, Surprise Bud! ... and reference pictures posted above are the same bunches. I hope these last 2 Orinoco bunches will show an improvement after I started twice daily watering until recent rains. Last edited by edwmax : 07-02-2019 at 10:21 PM. |

Re: 2019 -Update on My Bananas
Gotcha. That was a very nice looking bunch in 2017 and nine hands is probably monster for Orinoco. Good job.
Yeah, its been dry in my area too. Usually we have a ton of rain starting about mid-May and lasting through the summer but the storms seem to pass north or south of me. We are usually run over on the rain highway that comes out of the Gulf every year. I'm only deep watering about every three days and the plants seem to be okay. I have a ton of organic matter in the soil down to about four feet so I think that helps with water retention. Last two years we had a ton of rain and the growth of the nanners was much greater. Just got a huge bud on one of my big namwas so will be interesting to see if the lack of rain effects the number of fingers vs. last year. Last edited by Akula : 07-03-2019 at 12:15 AM. |

Re: 2019 -Update on My Bananas
I tried to post this yesterday but the forum wouldn't come up.
Looking over the nana patch, Saturday morning, I found Orinoco Bud #6. The count is Orinoco 6; Dwf Orinoco 3; Raja Puri 1; total 10 bunches ... I have 2 more Orinocos that have the height and size to Flower this summer and one more Rajapuri may flower. .... Anyway, the extra fertilizer that I put on this patch will push the young nanas to flower next year (if they don't freeze to the ground this winter). |

Re: 2019 -Update on My Bananas
Yesterday I transplanted 2 nana plants to the large patch. Then while mowing the grass I saw a Flag leaf on the Dwf Namwah mat. And then looking to the Dwf Brazillian mat, there was a bud just pushed out. These weren't showing a few days ago. ... So between to 2 nana patches, I now have 12 bunches growing.

Re: 2019 -Update on My Bananas
I have 2 more Flowers in my Large Nana patch!
Today about 12 noon passing by the patch, I saw this bud & flag on the FHIA1. Then while looking over the rest of the nana plants I found another Flower & flag on the Dwf Namwah. The total bunches for this year is 14. These 2 buds are still up right, so they only came in the last 3 or 4 days. ... I have about 100 days before frost to fill these two bunches. I'll have to push these two bunches hard and prune the bunch to get a taste Last edited by edwmax : 08-08-2019 at 03:03 PM. |

Re: 2019 -Update on My Bananas
I've been under the weather since this past Sunday but much better today. Thanks you All.
Checking my nana patch I found the Orinoco have given me 2 more bunches. Actually 3 bunches ... another bunch has been hidden for a week or so. I got may be 75 growing days left, so there is a chance to get these to fatten. First 2 new Flowers This bud is hidden deep under the nana canopy. It has 2 hands with small fingers showing, so I know that it hasn't been counted and may be only 2 weeks old. The other bunches have filled out very nicely and is at a pale green color. I waiting to see some yellow for maximum sweetness before harvesting. Last edited by edwmax : 08-29-2019 at 03:12 PM. |
