Zone 5b M.basjoo

Here's a pic of a mat of Musa basjoo that was overwintered in the ground.
My buddy has two other mats, but this is the tallest trying to reach 8'

Beautiful plants! They look a little crowded to me. I would think about separating them some and plant throughout the yard. Red

Nice! What winter prep did you do?

Please share ... how did you ever get them to overwinter in the ground in your zone? I live in the exact same zone and would love any pointers or advice.

Beautiful plants too, by the way.

Hey guys,

These are pics from a buddy's house that live down the street. This picture is of the other 2 mats. Next spring he will be thinning them out. This was only their second year summer in the ground. I need to go get a few more pics to show the growth they put on in the last month.

Last winter we cut the psuedostem down to 3'. We then built 4' tall wire cages about 4' diam. around each mat and packed straw around the bananas, and covered the whole thing with a tarp. His yard slopes towards the house so the bananas stayed fairly wet. This spring he put in the edgeing to help shep some of the extra water to the sides. He had the main psuedostem rot on every mat, but pups lived as you can see.
