That's exactly it Markku! So two questions. If it is from high elevations, does it get that appearance from being at higher elevations, in other words is it a permanent or temp trait? Also M yunn caii is the one I thought it might be. It pups a lot. What exactly does intermediate mean? It falls between the two I know, but is that all it really means? Traits of both yunn and caii? I guess that was more than two questions! Sorry!

Normally in higher elevation the bananas are more reddish and waxy. Intermediate means that they have charactreristics from both varieties. As they have been isolated for longer period the are evolving to own direction.

The fruits of var. caii are not edible due to number of big seeds. The seeds are twice as big than var. yunnanensis.

Thanks for your comments Caloosamusa. As always they are much appreciated. I was afraid you would say that about the color aspect. In regards to the red underside of the leaf mine does have that (although it seems to be variable from leaf to leaf), and the other plants didn't have it. Using Dr Markku's keys, I also narrarowed it down to the y. caii. In fact now it is putting put 3 pups close to the mother. It seems very vigourous. I had to cut the mother down a bit as it choked but that is starting to come along now. I think it will do well this year.

What made you think it might be xishuangbannaensis? Just curious.
I did notice for a small plant mine is making a big corm fast but the pups are close to the mother.

Dr Markku, yes those pictures are great! I'm impressed too by the elevation it grows at. It leads me to think it does have some nice hardiness to it. Maybe this coming year I will leave it outside. My basjoo made it through this past winter-a colder one-in great shape.

Those seeds look like they are just waiting to germinate!

I have a thompsonii that keeps the red leaf underside, and it has the dark petiole like the yunnanensis. I wonder if it is a thompsonii? It would be another one that would be useful to "Key." Is it truly a separate species?

Is the reddish leaf underside an environmental or genetic trait?

I hope this helps spur some useful, measurable observations. M. y. cali may not be edible but it may be a good progenator.
Musa thomsonii is a distinct species.
