To be able to sprout banana-seeds successfully, I would say you need atleast 50 or 100. I can see some of these companies have shocking prices for 5 or 10 seeds. Usually, these seeds are ordered from other online stores at wholesale prices. Not only monkey-fingers in this hobby, monkey-business too!

That company has a few rare musa species, but I'm having trouble ordering. My German isn't good enough I guess!

This is exactly the type of seed-companies I try to stay away from. If you look closely they have some names wrong, they have pictures of wrong bananas next to a named species (some also obviously stolen), some of the latin names and varieties are very questionable, and the prices are horrifying for 10 seeds.

I agree with Erlend, the names and pictures are so wrong on most of those that I would question what species you would be recieving at all. Its one thing to have wrong or outdated name for a species, to have blatantly WRONG and STOLEN pictures is a whole different thing.

The scary thing is that this company is just the tip of the iceberg. I have seen plenty of seed-dealers on the net taking their customers for fools.

Also, be very aware on e-bay, is my other advice.

And insist on atleast 50 seeds for germinating bananas. If you buy just 10, it might turn out to be a very expensive plant when you have to order again and again...

I haven't ordered banana seed from Jungle Seeds, but I have bought a number of other seeds from them (about 15 species I guess) and I have had minimal success in getting them to germinate. Even allowing for ineptness on my part, this is a poor success rate, and I emailed Jungle Seeds in September. I am still waiting for a reply!!!

I'm just about to order some seeds from a UK company called 'Ready To Grow' so if anybody knows any reason why I shouldn't (without committing libel that is!) I'd be extremely grateful for any insider info before I waste my money.

Don't buy from Ready To Grow, the prices are ridiculus for a few seeds. Besides, you need more than 10 or 15 to ensure germination!

I would suggest a specialized company that sells in quantity such as www.trebrown.com or www.banana-tree.com. These are my personal favourites at the moment.

Not sure if they really have E.maurelli seeds yet, but they are said to be the ONLY source for the true Trachycarpus princeps.

According to dutch sellers the seeds of true Trachy princeps are very very difficult to germinate. They sell 3 years old plants with divided leafs for 35 euro. They expect the price for this palm will rise in the near future.

Trachycarpus Princeps or the stone gate palm is a quite new palm and very rare!. This palm grows along the Salween rivier or in Chinese "Nu Jiang" (Angry river) on heights of 1000 to 6800 mtr above sea level in a area that is known as the stone gate were it first was discovered. But in fact this palm not only grows on cliffs but has a bigger area and grows actually in the "Nu Jiang" area in several small populations. The stone gate is just a part of that area. The princeps palm is covered with a thick pure white waxy substance, which easily differentiates it from other species.Think of the future!, sitting under this palm and look up against the white leaves. The upperside of the leaves has a special green color with a blue blush (when dry!). The original Trachycarpus princeps seeds are rare, and very hard to germinate! Therefore the price will become higher and higher in the future! This palm is frost hardy till -15°C and the most beautiful suited for outside.

Warning: because incorrect seeds of this palm are being sold, a green form of T.princeps circulats in the market, this palm has nothing do with our Princeps!, the so called green princeps palm stays green forever and becomes a fortunei looking palm, with a thin trunk and long leaves.We sell the real thing

A word of warning about www.banana-tree.com/ : They are selling seeds which they decribe as ' MUSA acuminata cv. "Dwarf Banana" ' I bought some of those back in 2005 and got 3 to germinate. They didn't seem to gain size quite as fast as I expected and started pupping while they were pretty small. This spring one of them started flowering and the reason for the small size became clear: They are not acuminata!! The flower stands straight up and is all pink so I guess it is velutina. They are still peddling the same stuff and they didn't react in any way when I informed them about it so I suspect they are doing it on purpose. (velutina seeds are easier to come by and germinate well -> less expenses and customer complaints early on and who cares if a few of them are disappointed 2-3 years later)

My own rule of thumb, "don't buy edible banana seeds expecting edible bananas". Because its quite simple, edible bananas are edible because they don't have seeds, so if you are attempting to grow them from seed, obviously whatever fruit it came from was seeded and thus is not edible.
