New banana species at RPS

I got an email from RPS yesterday and they have loads of new species of musa available from Borneo. They are too numerous to list, but

I had to buy some.

I'm not on commision, and I think they are a bit expensive, but check them out. rarepalmseeds.com - palm seeds, cycad seeds, banana seeds

I bought some musa bauensis and musa monticola, never heard of them, but boy am I excited.

I know it...I've spent WAY too much money over the past several weeks with them! Musa voonii looks pretty cool also, and I ordered all of the new species they are offering. M. campestris and its varieties have been long awaited since I first saw pictures of the fruit of this species. Unfortunately, none of them will be very cold hardy more than likely, with the possible exception of M. monticola. We'll see!

Funny thing that the Borneo species seeds actually float in water, not because they're old or to dry, but because they have sort of an airpocket in the seeds that makes them float.

As I can remember Tog was explainig that once and according to his story there is ONLY M. violascens seeds that floats. That seed is in that pics are M. violascens seed and U can see that they are different shape (smooth and cilindric) than regular Musa seeds. Non of mine ever sprouted

Any issues bring the seeds into the US? I have my eye on the M. vooni also!

I was on RPS last week and saw the vooni and campestris and almost cried! Those are some nice looking, very container-able (only 3-5 feet) species! I mean c'mon, who doesnt wanna try to eat a seeded nanner that is white with violet streaking? I know I do! My wife is sick of me talking about it!

Ha Ha !!! Bob, that's to funny. I just ordered seeds there the other day, but forgot to order some of the lesser known ones. ButMusa monticola looks very cool.

I also ordered these seeds, these are very interesting. And RPS sent the seeds to my friend Helton to Brazil, Helton will germinate my seed, so that I will grow these in my new yard in Brazil.

Helton has already received the seeds, the seeds were arrived in Brazil well. These are new in Brazil!

Yes, Helton has as one rare fruit grower one import permit for seeds from rare fruits and also from bananas.

These might thrive in Brazil very well outdoors!

I received some of the M. bauensis seeds that originally came from RPS, and after seeing the seeds and taking a closer look at the photos they do not seem to have M. bauensis. I didn't look to carefully at the photos before, but looking at it now it does not seem to be a Callimusa species, and the seeds definitely do not look right and look more or like a Musa section species. Their photos almost look like some form of M. acuminata, but it's hard to tell really without seeing the whole plant.

Thanks Gabe. Is it just the Bauensis that's a problem or are there issues with the Voonii, Monticola etc aswell?

I haven't had any success in germinating these seeds. Has anyone else? Got any photos?

Most of their other banana seed ID's look fine except for M. ornata 'orange flower' and M. sakaiana. The "ornata" (which it is not) looks maybe to be even some kind of Callimusa perhaps, but seeing the seed would help. Either way it's not M. ornata or any form it. The M. sakaiana looks a bit off too perhaps, theirs looks more like something in the textilis-tuberculata-muluensis group. But also we must remember that there is very little information presented with these specimens so some of it is hard to say for sure, and with plants collected from the wild like this it's often easier to say what it is not rather than what it is.

I have had no possibiliies to visit in the forum for a while as I have been in remote areas in China for research on wild bananas. Now I am based on Guangzhou for a week.

What is coming to RPS seeds they got locations of the Bornean Musa species by following the GPS position which were given in my articles. They are correctly identified as I checked the photos which they sent to me for identification.
It is truethat M.sakaiana looks very much an Australimusa and the section will be combined to the section Callimusa in the new classification.

The seeds are floating as they have dried up. However, they can dry up to 85 % and still to be viable. What is coming to Bornean Musa species seeds they are very difficult to germinate as they are going to dormant very fast.

Hi,

Gabe is right. The seeds in the photo are either sections Musa or Rhodochlamys seeds. I studied personally Musa bauensis from Bau limestone area Sarawak Borneo in 2002 and its description was publised in 2005.

It was a long time ago since I received them, and I didn't have the foresight to take a photo, but they looked very similar to those I'm sure. I mixed several batches of different seeds together in one pot because I got fed up with them. I had Monticola, Bauensis, Burmese Blue and Beccarii from RPS and I threw in a few Thompsonii just for good measure later on. I had some Burmese blue and 1 Beccarii germinate I think.
