Musa sp 'New Bhutan'

Seeds of this banan appeared some time ago under the name of
Musa paradisiaca var. seminifera 'New Bhutan'
which is not a valid name.
I grow a couple of plants from seed but I could not found new information.

I would like to know if it is cold-hardy :coldbanana: and if it is a species cultivar, a subspecies or a hybrid :bananarow:

Does somebody have any information?

I dont think anyone has flowered it and showed anyone, so until we can get pictures of a mature flowering plant, nothing will be known.

Re: Musa sp 'New Bhutan'

It is without a doubt a hybrid, and not a stable one(hasn't been back crossed enough to keep steady characteristics). So far out of the dozen or so that I have left, some are almost outgrowing 5 gallon pots(all light green waxy), and others that have alot of purple are mostly slow growing dwarfish and barely filling out one gallon pots, and there are also alot of inbetween ones. A picture does more to convey the point, but I still can't post pics yet.
My guess is it a M.flaviflora hybrid, but who knows?

What error do you get when you try to post pics?
If you just don't know how, I can walk you through the process.

Re: Musa sp 'New Bhutan'

This week I have got some M. flaviflora seeds, if they sprout I will be able to compare both plants, of course if they are true flaviflora seeds  .

Some discussion regarding this question at

Kyle, here's the plant I got from you last year. It spent the winter in the greenhouse, and grew well for awhile. Recently, growth has slowed down to a crawl, and it has only been holding 2-3 leaves at a time. The pseudostem looks like M. itinerans to me, so I agree that it is probably a hybrid.

Pseudostem of Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannaensis for comparison:

Re: Musa sp 'New Bhutan'

Looks healthy, wonder why it has slowed so much. I should have sent you one of the ones that seemed like the possible other parent(short, slow, and alot of red on leaves, and stem), since I managed to nearly kill all of them except for one off, and I'm still waiting on one of my two taller greens to come back from stem. I like testing these new ones for cold hardiness, and the verdict is still out on them for me.
Thanks for showing it!

Re: Musa sp 'New Bhutan'

Hey Kyle, I think it's just badly potbound right now. I imagine when I get it in the ground it'll start exploding in growth. That seems to happen frequently when I plant potbound bananas in the ground. They seem to be so grateful, that they go crazy! :0489:

Hope your vacation in Mexico is going well! We're still waiting on pics from your vacation to Mexico last year!

Just received some Musa paradisiaca var. seminifera 'New Bhutan' seeds from Sunshine seeds in Belgium. Only got 20 of them, but we shall see what comes from them.

Here's a link to the other thread of Musa 'Bhutan' with a pic of a few plants with different characteristics.
