I have just found out that what i thought was a Basjoo is probably a Helen's hybrid. I am after some advice on how this plant likes to be looked after. I know about the basjoo as this is what i thought i had, but winter is getting closer, well a few months. I want to be prepared to get my plant through the winter. Also how is the best way to protect this from the light frosts that we get on the south coast in the uk, want to keep it growing through the winter. Thanks for any help anyone can offer also if they can confirm that this is a helen's hybrid i would be greatful this is the thread with the photos on Musa Basjoo??? thanks again

Impossible to say if it's a Helens hybrid for sure. I have raised numerous helens from seed, and they show vast differences in phenotype.

In any case, if it's going in the ground, protect it in a straw-filled cage, and cover with plastic to keep the rain out. If it's in a pot, put in in a greenhouse or conservatory.

Hello,
Another banana enthusiast in UK here.
I have all three varieties that you mention.
That plant is "Sikkimensis" a very lovely plant when it matures and also almost as hardy as "Basjoo".
Bring him inside for the Winter when you get first real bad weather (leave it as long as you can) but keep it BONE DRY, that I have found to be the secret when we force them into dormancy.
If it gets too big to bring inside then wrap it well (many examples of what to do on this great forum) and put in a sheltered spot. Cover it completely so it gets no damp or sun and it will "rest".
