Re: Musa Dajiao

"Dajiao" -Da means in Chinese Great or Big, and Jiao means Banana.
So it shall mean "Great Banana" or "Big Banana".
But I have no idea why this banana has been so called.

I don't know anything about it. But being where you live I'd give it a try.:bananas_b

Re: Musa Dajiao

Sounds like a name made up by the nursery or their supplier.

Why would a cross between 2 Indian species be given a Chinese name? don't we already have crosses between Sikkimensis and Balbisiana? 'Darjeeling Giant'. I suppose it could be a cross the other way, but even so.
Aaah a quick search gives me :- Dongguan Agristar Biotechnology Co., Ltd.
Musa Dajiao.

Re: Musa Dajiao

It is an ABB type from China, but I do not know the subgroup or what its really related to other than other Da Jiao types (there are multiples). It is a good banana, similar in taste and texture to common 'Namwah'. ABB types, partly because of their high M. balbisiana parentage, tend to be very vigorous and quick growing. They are not M. sikkimensis/M. balbisiana hybrids.

This photo from China shows 2 types. You may have to view it full size in the gallery to read the names.

Re: Musa Dajiao

I don't know anything of its hardiness, but I would guess it is nothing too special. It is definitely not a member of the AAB Silk subgroup, it is an ABB.

Re: Musa Dajiao

Here is my 1 year old Dajao. Never mind the plastic box, it's to stop the chickens who always go there to dig.
It will be the first winter outside, it does grow very well indoor even better than outside.

Re: Musa Dajiao

Looking good, will u protect it somehow during the winter?

00christian00 09-06-2018 12:33 AM

Re: Musa Dajiao

I am thinking of leaving it outside unprotected.
Last year I lost all my bananas because we had some cold weather from north east Europe in spring that lasted for a week, otherwise all the banana did well in the winter including the small one.
We rarely reach -2 and usually for few nights only.
Instead last spring we had a snow with -1 during the day and -2/-3 during the night for a week, at the 3rd day all nana died because of the water inside freezing and cracking everything. Some were even protected with pluriball.
They were all smaller than this however.

Re: Musa Dajiao

Yes, same as here. I also had to dig out most of mine for that cold spell. Let's hope we'll both have a "normal winter" again.

A strong plant you have there Christian and a good growth for only one season.

But somehow the plant from you Ante looks different to me.

At least here on this threat it is. Or is it only becouse of the hot spot where it is planted in?

Mine comes from :
palmenverkoop.nl

They were very cheap, can't remember now, around 5 eur.
The site is not working now.
Banana pups are all so similar that anybody could send anything....
We will never know if mine is a Dajiao or Ante's is one, could be neither.

Re: Musa Dajiao

I just checked that thread, the tissue culture one look like mine(slim elongated leaves), the bigger one at page 3 looks like nothing like mine.
Are these from the same batch or you bought them elsewhere?

Dalmatiansoap 09-07-2018 04:42 AM

Re: Musa Dajiao

Yes I agree. Who knows what did they mixed up. Probably a part is mixed up in lab and part by all dealers what were involved in distribution
