Musa aurantiaca, how's yours looking?

M. aurantiaca just got put outside for the first time, and it's really starting to show some of it's color on the new leaf. It's almost got a blood leaf banana look but not quite, but the flower should be the highlight anyways. My seed germinated outside in really early spring last year when it was really chilly, along with some Musa sikkimensis seeds, so I'm hoping that that's a sign of cold tolerance. If your wondering why it is so small, I took the smallest one of the batch of seedlings, because it was easier to move with a smaller plant, and it might just stay shorter because it is an ornamental.

I'm up here in the cold country, how's yours looking in warmer parts of the country or abroad?

I commented on your photo gallery pic, but wanted to let you know on this thread how great looking your banana looks. I sure do have the talent for germinating nanners!!! Keep up the good work and keep us posted. Can't wait to see the flower and how cold hardy it is. If you need it tested in a little warmer environ, you know who to contact!!! Would love to get an extra from you if you have one...

Thanks for the complements guy's. I did have a bunch of extras, but had to cut down on the amount of nanners I had before I moved, so unfortunatly it's my only one left. I'll post some more pictures as it progresses, but Frank has it too, so I'm looking forward to seeing how his looks too in his warmer/better banana growing climate.

If it produces seeds, I would like some if they become available. LMK, and I will gladly pay for them and shipping.

If I get seeds off it I'll let you know, or if there's someone inclined maybe they would want to tissue culture a pup.

I was just reading up on tissue culture and while I am anxious to try it, would not feel comfortable using such a valued specimen until I have it down pat. But if I grew some from seed, I will use them to TC once I get some background and more experience. I think that Gabe and Chong may know how it's done.

Kyle, this could be a great one to grow some seeds from and send to Gabe for TC. I am reading up on the subject and find it very fascinating. Hopefully, I will understand it soon and be able to TC on my own. With Gabe's help the learning curve will be much shorter.

Kyle, the one that you sent me is getting some very good size to it, but it is still in a pot. I've got about 3 pups on it, another young plant that I germinated, and I just saw a new sprout in the box yesterday, so I now have 3. I have my doubts as to whether or not we have the real Musa aurantiaca though, because it really doesn't fit the description by Markku Hakkinen. I even emailed him a picture of mine, and he didn't think it looked like it, but he didn't rule out that it is a possible new variety of M. aurantiaca. Whatever it is, it is a very attractive plant, and I can't wait for a flower! I'll try to get a picture up one of these days.

P.S. Randy...Thailand, not Taiwan, LOL!

Nice! So I take it that it's a dwarf, and not some tall type. I was hoping that that's what it would be, and a flower will show sooner that way too.
Right now mine is my fastest grower of new leafs. Looking forward to some other pics!
