This is the true Musa aurantiaca, and it is native to Tibet, Northern Arunachal Pradesh, and Northern Assam.

The seeds that Trebrown offered a couple of years ago, and which I have a couple seedlings of, were collected in Myanmar, and Markku says that this is probably a distinct variety or species. We'll just have to wait for it to flower!

The article also mentions low cold-sensitivity...could this be another banana for those of us in zone 7? I hope so.

Thanks for the link, BigDog. I sure do hope they are able to survive our climate as the color would be so at home around here, huh!?!?! LOL (Go Big Orange!!!)... Anyway, again, thanks for the info and keep us updated to your progress with it...

It looks so similar to Laterita, difficult to differentiate them. I have been trying to find seeds of Aurantiaca for some time, so let me know if anyone hears of some out there.

Thanks for that update. Just judging on leaf, and stem characteristics alone, the one we are growing is definatly not Musa aurantiaca. Mine has a whole lot of red/maroon in the midrib, as well as light red on the underside of the leafs, as opposed to the all green one in the description.
So far it has put out 8 pups, two have nearly caught up with the mother, which seems to be bulking up a bit now, but still pushing regular leafs.

Well, the variety that I grow looks absolutely nothing like Musa laterita. Haven't really seen the true form up close, but I think it looks more like M. mannii or M. rubinea than anything else.

sunshine-seeds.com sells M. aurantiaca seeds. Just send them an email...unless you can read German! They will respond to you in English, and you can use PayPal to pay them. Easy to do business with, good customer service, and the seeds are usually pretty good (although these are the same seeds that Trebrown collected a couple of years ago).
